Football: Lewis-Buchanan, Baer Receive Sun Belt Weekly Honors 11/8/11

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns senior linebacker Devon-Lewis Buchanan was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week and junior kicker/punter Brett Baer was named Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
 
Lewis-Buchanan had a career-high 12 tackles including 11 solo tackles in the 36-35 win over La.-Monroe. He also had 3.0 tackles-for-loss and pass break up in the win. Lewis-Buchanan stepped up his play in the second half posting eight tackles and 2.0 TFL.
 
With the Cajuns trailing 35-24 to La.-Monroe with 3:08 remaining in the contest, everyone knew UL would have to score a quick touchdown and convert on the onside kick. Baer and the Cajuns did just that as he executed the onside kick to perfection allowing Ladarius Green to recover the kick at the ULM 39 to set up the game-winning score.
 
Baer also posted his fifth kick of 40-plus yards after drilling a 41-yard field goal in the second quarter to give the Ragin’ Cajuns a 24-14 lead going into the half.
 
This week’s honors increase the number of weekly SBC honors for the Cajuns this season to 10, which is a school record for Player of the Week accolades besting the previous high of nine set in 2008. It’s the third time this season that the Cajuns had multiple honorees (Lance Kelley & Brett Baer on Oct. 3 following FAU game/Melvin White & Alonzo Harris on Oct. 31 following MT game).
