Football: Late Surge Carries White Team Past Red In Ragin’ Cajuns Annual Spring Game, 20-10

LAFAYETTE   Redshirt freshman Gunner Hudspeth engineered a pair of fourth-quarter scoring drives for the Louisiana Ragin  Cajuns football team, and Darius Hoggins rushed for a pair of touchdowns to lead the White team to a 20-10 win over the Red team in the annual Red-White Spring Game on Saturday at Cajun Field.

Hoggins, who rushed for 85 yards on 15 carries, scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter before sealing the win for the White team with a 26-yard TD run with 1:19 remaining.

I m proud of the team, I thought we played hard today,  head coach Mark Hudspeth said.  I thought (quarterback) Jordan (Davis) struggled a little bit today, but we really handcuffed him. We were not really running much of what we re doing at all. We didn t get the tempo today like we normally do. Overall, he did a couple of good things, but didn t have the day he wished he should have had.

The Red team took an early 3-0 lead after Stevie Artigue converted on a 27-yard field goal with 4:27 remaining in the first quarter to cap a 15-play drive. Redshirt freshman Jordan Wright, who rushed for a game-high 88 yards, rushed for 16 yards on third-and-1 and later added a 6-yard gain on fourth-and-2.

Jordan Wright has shown us what he can do all spring and I think he s a guy that we can really count on,  Hudspeth said.  The main thing that I was glad to see was that we got a lot of offensive linemen in there, got a lot of quality reps with our No. 1 and 2 offensive line. I thought that was big as we try to develop some depth.

Chris Weaver, who finished 13-for-23 for 123 yards in the air, drove the White team on the following drive as he connected with Chris Collins on a 13-yard pass on second-and-2 to the White 46. Redshirt freshman Carlos Robinson added a 7-yard gain on second-and-2 to the Red 14 before Hoggins would score four plays later for a 7-3 lead.

The White team took a 10-3 lead in the third quarter when freshman Calvin Linden connected on a 35-yard field goal with 4:34 remaining before the Red team would respond with a 17-play, 75-yard drive to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

Wright continued the drive as he converted a fourth-and-1 situation with a 4-yard gain to the Red 34 before Jordan Davis scrambled for 6 yards to midfield on third-and-4. Davis added a 17-yard strike to Keenan Barnes to the White 34 before Cardaye Spencer gained 14 yards for a first down the 20.

The Red team would tie the game six plays later when Wright bulled his way into the end zone on a 1-yard run and Aaron Bird s PAT knotted the score at 10-10 with 8:26 remaining.

The younger Hudspeth completed passes 3-of-4 passes for 70 yards, including throws of 24 and 30 yards to freshman Christian Hayes. Linden, a former John Curtis product, would convert on a go-ahead 23-yard field goal for the White team with 5:46 left.

Dion Ray rushed for nine yards on second-and-9 to the Red 35 and later connected with Ja Marcus Bradley on a 10-yard pass on third-and-11, before the White team defense stuffed Spencer on fourth-and-1 at the Red 44.

Hayes, Robinson and Michael Jacquet each caught four passes for the White team with Simeon Thomas recording nine tackles. Trey Granier added nine stops for the White team defense with LaDarrius Kidd adding seven stops.

Barnes and Al Riles caught four passes for the Red team while Davis finished 12-for-21 for 87 yards. Redshirt freshman Kaleb Fredericks recorded a team-high nine tackles with a sack for the Red team, which had five sacks in the game. Reggie Miles added seven stops for the Red team while redshirt freshman Joe Dillon was credited with three tackles and a pair of sacks.
