Football: Kicker Baer makes even more history 9/2/12

Tim Buckley, The Advertiser, September 2, 2012

His first field goal of the night was a career-long, from 52 yards out, tying for seventh-longest in school history.

He would go on to make three more, from 40, 39 and 32 yards.

That combined with four PATs gave him 16 points, tying him with Rafael Septien vs. San Jose State in 1974 and Mike Lemoine vs. Central Michigan in 1989 for most points by a UL kicker in a game.

And his fourth field goal of the night was his 15th straight dating back to last season, breaking Mike Shafer’s 1994 school record of 14.

Did Brett Baer have a clue he was doing any of that?

Of course not.

"I didn’t even know about those two records until just now," he said after the game.

Coaches and teammates, however, were hardly surprised Baer did what he did.

They saw him go 18-of-20 on field goals last season, including a 50-yarder that beat San Diego State in the New Orleans Bowl.

After Saturday night, he’s 29-of-31 for his career — a 93.5 percent clip.

"To me," Cajuns head coach Mark Hudspeth said, "he played the way tonight he has prepared this summer and this camp for the last five weeks."

"We definitely know Brett is superb," UL quarterback Blaine Gautier added. "I mean, he can go out there and make kicks from all over the field. It’s great to have Brett come out there and make those kicks and put points on the board."

Carter, Surgent hurt

As expected, Cecilia High product Montrel Carter opened at running back over 2011 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year Alonzo Harris.

But he didn’t last long, exiting after six carries and 27 net yards due to a left knee injury.

Hudspeth said afterward that he did not know the extent of the injury, but that Carter would undergo an MRI exam today.

UL also played most of the game without starting receiver Darryl Surgent.

Surgent returned the game’s opening kickoff 41 yards, but he sustained a slight hamstring strain and coaches opted to keep him out for precautionary reasons.

With Surgent out, the Cajuns opened with two tight ends, starter Ian Thompson and backup Jake Maxwell.

Maxwell caught quarterback Gautier’s first game pass of the game, on UL’s first offensive play.

Lineup change

The Cajuns made a late change to their starting lineup Saturday, unexpectedly opening with senior Emeka Onyenekwu at defensive end and moving LSU transfer Cordian Hagans from defensive end to defensive tackle over Christian Ringo.

Onyenekwu finished with three tackles, one solo and two assists, all behind the line of scrimmage.

Lagniappe

Cajuns backup defensive lineman Darrell Green (undisclosed injury) did not play. "» In the house: Ex-Cajuns quarterback and NFL veteran Brian Mitchell, who ran for a school-record five touchdowns the last time he and Lamar were on Cajun Field at the same time — in 1989. "» Re-entry was allowed into reserved Cajun Field parking areas Saturday, but that was a one-day only thing prompted by the wet weather.
