Football: Jabbar Juluke Named the 2019 FootballScoop Running Backs Coach of the Year

Juluke is the first coach in program history to earn the distinction

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Football’s Jabbar Juluke has been named the 2019 FootballScoop Running Backs Coach of the Year, the website announced on Tuesday. Juluke was selected based off nominations by coaches, athletic directors and previous winners.

Juluke earned the award after Louisiana’s running backs helped the Ragin’ Cajuns finish the 2019 campaign ranked sixth nationally in overall rushing yards (3,604), third nationally in yards per rush (6.28) and helping the Louisiana offense rank third nationally in total rushing touchdowns (42).

He also coached three, 800-yard running backs this year, paced by junior Elijah Mitchell, who ran for 1,147 yards on the ground to become the sixth player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-yard threshold.

Since Juluke joined the staff last season, he has coached two of the six student-athletes that have rushed for over 1,000 in a single-season in the school’s history in Mitchell (1,147) and Trey Ragas (1,181) in 2018.

Not only did Juluke’s group rack up rushing yards, but they helped shatter the single-season rushing touchdown record after the unit found the end zone 39 times in 2019. Mitchell led the way with 16 touchdowns, tying him for 11th in the country, while Ragas also surpassed the double digit mark in rushing scores with 11.

Juluke’s running backs were recognized by the Sun Belt at the end of the season when Mitchell earned a place on the All-Sun Belt Second Team and Calais and Ragas earning spots on the All-Sun Belt Third Team.
