A new era of football officially began for Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns on Friday, as first-year head coach Mark Hudspeth conducted the team’s first spring practice of the 2011 season.

The team participated in 25 five-minute periods as practice was held outdoors on the practice fields. The spring roster consists of 91 players, of which 83 participated in the first practice.

"I have been in a lot of first day spring football practices as a coach and a lot times you walk off the field saying, it looks like the first day," said Hudspeth.

"In a lot of ways it did. In a lot of other ways, I think we might have been slightly ahead of the curve. I think a lot of that has to do with the way our guys have been preparing up to this point with our offseason workouts and meetings."

Hudspeth indicated that the team focused on fundamentals in their first of 15 practices.

"The big picture is that we have to be great fundamentally," said Hudspeth. "We have to become great fundamental players in blocking, tackling, route running and throwing. If we can do that, we will be in great shape. "

The first-year head coach noted his excitement about the direction of the Ragin’ Cajuns program.

"I think we have such an outstanding staff and a hardworking group of guys," said Hudspeth. "If we can continue to work hard together, good things are going to happen."

Practices are open to the media, RCAF members, current UL students and former football lettermen.  If rain or lightning forces the team inside the Leon Moncla Indoor Practice Facility, then spring practice will be closed to everyone except the media.

The schedule will then be every Friday, Sunday and Wednesday until the Annual Spring Game at Cajun Field on Saturday, April 9 at 5 p.m.

A new feature to this year’s spring game will be the addition of regular season game activities and atmosphere.  All reserved tailgating spaces will be held until 10 a.m. Saturday morning for those who purchased their tailgating space during the 2010 season.  All unused spaces will open on a first-come, first-serve basis shortly after 10 a.m.  The athletic department is sponsoring a pre-game band which will start at 3 p.m.  The team will take the Cajun Walk led by the band and cheerleaders.  There will also be a ‘Kid Zone’ inside Cajun Field.

Admission for the 2011 Spring Game is $5.  All proceeds will be invested in the Ragin’ Cajuns Athletic Foundation.  Current UL students (with a valid ID) and fans under 12 are free.
