Football: Four Cajuns honored on SBC Freshman TeamDaily Advertiser Staff Report December 23, 2010 One of the first comments that Mark Hudspeth made after being introduced last week as UL’s new head football coach was that the cupboard was far from bare in terms of returning talent. Some of his new players — a quartet of freshmen — recently picked up some noteworthy honors. Tailback Aaron Spikes, offensive lineman Andre Huval, defensive end Justin Anderson and safety Cooper Gerami were named to the Sun Belt Conference all-freshman team, an unofficial squad created by newspaper beat writers independent of the league office. Spikes and Huval were true freshmen, while Anderson and Gerami were redshirt freshmen. Those four players were among the 30 student-athletes to make that team. Only ULM had more players with six on the squad. Rivals.com included Spikes, Huval and Anderson on its Sun Belt all-freshman team. "That is really exciting for our program to have so many freshmen honored," Hudspeth said. "I know all Cajun fans are really proud of them." Spikes, a former Texas Tech pledge, ranked seventh in the Sun Belt this season with eight touchdowns. He led the team with 339 rushing yards and was second in receptions (23), receiving yards (398), receiving yards per catch (17.3) and touchdown catches (six). Huval, who played his prep ball at St. Thomas More, fought off various injuries to make several starts and earn significant playing time as a freshman. Anderson logged 21 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one pass breakup and one pass defended in 10 games in his return from a broken leg last spring. Gerami, another STM graduate, received a hardship waiver from the NCAA to play immediately after transferring from Northwestern University. He tied for eighth on the squad with 31 tackles and had 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one pass breakup, two passes defended and one blocked kick. The unofficial Sun Belt writers all-freshman team did not name superlative awards. Troy quarterback Corey Robinson was named Rivals.com’s Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. The redshirt freshman threw for 3,339 yards and 24 TDs to help the Trojans win a share of the league title. Florida Atlantic defensive end Cory Henry was named Rivals.com’s top freshman defender. The true freshman led the team and tied for seventh in the league with five sacks and had 8.5 tackles for loss and three quarterback hurries. Those freshman honors came after several Cajuns earned individual postseason accolades despite UL going 3-9 this season. Ladarius Green, a junior tight end, was named an All-American by CBSSports.com (second team), Heisman Pundit (third team) and Phil Steele (fourth team). He also was a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award. Green was first-team all-conference, senior center Ian Burks was a second-team pick and senior cornerback Orkeys Auriene and senior punter Spencer Ortego were honorable mention selections as announced by the league office. That all-conference team was selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches as well as one media member per school. Phil Steele tabbed Green and Auriene as first-team all-Sun Belt selections. 2010 UNOFFICIAL SUN BELT FRESHMAN TEAM SPECIAL TEAMS Rivals.com’s Sun Belt All-Freshman Team DEFENSE SPECIAL TEAMS ![]()
