Eight Cajuns earned All-Sun Belt honors in 2008
Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns had eight different players earn 11 individual honors on the 2008 All-Sun Belt team, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Senior running back Tyrell Fenroy was named the 2008 Sun Belt Player of the Year as well as a first team selection.  Senior quarterback Michael Desormeaux was a first team selection and the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year.  Senior wide receiver Jason Chery also captured two awards, as he was named to the second team as a wide receiver and as an all-purpose specialist.
Joining Desormeaux and Fenroy on the first team were junior offensive linemen Brad Bustle and Chris Fisher.  The Cajuns claimed a total of three offensive linemen on the All-Sun Belt Team, as sophomore tackle Jonathan Decoster garnered honorable mention.  Defensively, senior safety Derik Keyes placed on the second team and senior linebacker Antwyne Zanders was honorable mention.
Fenroy, a four-time All-SBC performer and the 2005 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, earned his third straight first team honor.  He became only the seventh player in NCAA history with four 1,000-yard rushing seasons and shattered the UL and Sun Belt records for career rushing yards and career rushing touchdowns.  Fenroy was one of 10 semifinalists for the prestigious Doak Walker Award and the only player outside the BCS on that list.  He was also a semifinalist for the Underdog Award by NationalChamps.net which recognizes the best FBS Mid-Major player in the nation.  He was named National Player of the Week after recording 297 rushing yards and three TD’s in a rivalry game at ULM and was the SBC Offensive Player of the Week three times this season.  Fenroy led the Sun Belt in rushing and scoring, both overall and per game, while placing 11th in the nation in rushing and 8th overall in scoring.
Desormeaux, who had previously been on the All-SBC team three times as an all-purpose specialist, was named the first team starting quarterback.  Under his guidance, the Cajuns offense led the conference in total yards, rushing yards, yards per game, rushing yards per game, yards per play, third down conversion percentage and touchdowns.  The Cajuns rank 16th in the nation in total offense and 24th in scoring.  Desormeaux led the conference in total offense and yards per play.  He was second in passing yards per attempt and in completion percentage.  He badly injured his knee in the Cajuns sixth game of the season (second SBC game) and still ranked second in the SBC in rushing (to Fenroy).  With his mobility limited during the conference stretch run, Desormeaux went on to lead the Sun Belt in passing efficiency in SBC only games.
Chery earned praise at wide receiver after finishing second in the SBC in receiving touchdowns, fifth in receiving yards and seventh in receptions.  He ranked third in the conference in yards per reception among players with at least 40 catches.  His play on special teams also earned Chery recognition on the second team as an all-purpose selection.  He was second in the conference in all-purpose yards and led the SBC in kickoff return yards.  Chery was fourth in the SBC in total touchdowns and ranked first among non-running backs, while ranking 14th in rushing yards.  He made 14 tackles (13 solo) on specials teams kickoff and punt coverage.
Bustle, Decoster and Fisher were a key part of the offensive line that helped the Cajuns roll up school records in rushing yards, rushing yards per game, total offensive yards, total offensive yards per game and touchdowns.  UL is sixth in the nation in rushing and first overall in the SBC.  The Cajuns led the SBC in offensive yards per play, total offensive yards, total yards per game, touchdowns and third down conversion percentage.  All those figures wouldn’t be possible without the offensive line play.  Fisher (Rimington Trophy Watch List & 2007 Second Team All-SBC), Bustle and Decoster paved the way for an offensive line without a single senior.
Keyes, who was healthy for a majority of the season for the first time in his career, ranked fifth in the Sun Belt in interceptions in conference games and third in passes defended.  He tied for the team lead in tackles, interceptions and pass break-ups.  Keyes was fourth on the Cajuns in tackles-for-loss and ranked 21st in the conference in tackles.
Zanders makes the All-SBC team for the second straight year after earning second team honors last season.  He was the only Cajuns linebacker to appear in every game this season, playing both middle and outside linebacker.  Zanders tied for the team lead in tackles and ranked second in tackles-for-loss.  He made at least four tackles in 10 of 12 games and ranked 16th in the conference in tackles during SBC play.
