Gautier’s score trimmed the Cajuns’ deficit to 24-17. UL (2-9, 2-5 Sun Belt) forced FIU (5-5, 5-1 Sun Belt) into a three-and-out, however would stall at the FIU 48-yard line and returned the ball to FIU with 12:50 remaining in the game. Spencer Ortego’s punt pinned the Golden Panthers at their own six-yard line. FIU marched 94 yards over 15 plays, culminating in a Darriet Perry rushing touchdown at 5:52 for a 31-17 edge. Toronto Smith intercepted a Blaine Gautier pass three plays into the ensuing possession and the Golden Panthers cashed in, getting another Perry rushing touchdown, coming with 3:52 remaining, to wrap up the victory. Gautier led all players with 112 rushing yards. He also completed 13 passes for 186 yards. Mackey Award semifinalist Ladarius Green posted six receptions and gained 103 yards – his third 100-yard output in the past four games. Green currently ranks as the nation’s leading tight end with six receiving touchdowns. Wes Carroll completed 16-of-19 passes for 162 yards for FIU. Darian Mallary and Darriet Perry combined for 161 yards rushing. T.Y. Hilton was held to 73 yards receiving. The first two offensive possessions for the Cajuns ended with UL being forced to punt. But both times, Ortego’s punts were downed within the Golden Panthers’ two-yard line. UL’s defense forced a three-and-out on FIU’s first possession. But the following FIU possession, the Golden Panthers put together a 16-play, 99-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. The Cajuns responded with a long drive of their own. After an 11-play, 64-yard drive, Brett Baer split the uprights on a 25-yard field goal to make the contest, 7-3 and that’s where the score remained at halftime. In the opening minutes of the third quarter, a 49-yard pass set up FIU’s second touchdown of the night. On the Cajuns’ first second half possession, FIU intercepted Gautier pass at UL’s 30-yard line. Six plays later, the Golden Panthers notched a 25-yard field goal for a 17-3 lead at 13:50 of the third quarter. UL began to cut into FIU’s lead on the ensuing drive. Facing third-and-four from midfield, Gautier hit a wide open Ladarius Green for 50 yards for the Cajuns’ first touchdown of the night. Green’s touchdown reception capped off a quick four-play, 65-yard drive. After FIU returned an interception for a touchdown for a 24-10 lead at 4:05, UL responded.
