UL honored its 20-member senior class prior to the team’s final home game of the season.

Those seniors include Tyler Albrecht, Orkeys Auriene, Ian Burks, Jonathan Decoster, Matt Desormeaux, Richie Falgout, Grant Fleming, Seth Guilbeaux, Nasser Jamal, Julian Jones, Daylon McCoy, Marlin Miller, Sharrick Moore, Spencer Ortego, Terrell Richardson, Jermaine Rogers, Maurice Rolle Jr., Colin Windsor and Vernon Wolfe.

Five of those seniors — Desormeaux (Catholic High of New Iberia), Falgout (Lafayette), Fleming (St. Thomas More), Guilbeaux (North Vermilion) and Ortego (Teurlings Catholic) — are local players.

Auriene, Fleming and Ortego started all four of their years at UL. All but Wolfe, a junior college transfer, helped the Cajuns win six games in 2008 and ’09. Wolfe was on the 2009 team.

Albrecht (marketing), Desormeaux (mathematics), Falgout (management), Moore (management) and Rolle (management) have already earned their undergraduate degrees. The Cajuns are one of 23 teams in the FBS that have at least five graduates on its active roster.

"They’ve been tremendous and helped keep this team together," UL coach Rickey Bustle said of his senior class. "We’ve got a great class of young men in there, and I’m not just talking about athletic-wise. They’re good people. They have passion for this game, and they want to do the right things."

Thank you

UL also recognized athletic director David Walker and associate athletic director/director of athletic training John Porche prior to the game and at halftime, respectively.

Walker, who has served the university in several administrative positions over the past 32 years, is set to retire in January.

Porche plans to retire at the end of the academic year this spring, ending his 29-year career at UL. He has spent 38 years as a head athletic trainer at the collegiate level.

Block party

UL receiver Vernon Wolfe blocked an FIU punt late in the second quarter. It was the 43rd blocked kick for the Cajuns during the Rickey Bustle era going back to 2002. That’s the fourth-most blocked kicks nationally over that stretch behind Fresno State (55), Rutgers (47) and Texas (47).

It was only the second blocked kick of the season for UL. Jermaine Rogers blocked an extra-point attempt in the final minute to clinch a 28-27 win over North Texas on Oct. 2.

Moving on up

After making six catches for 103 yards and one touchdown, UL junior tight end Ladarius Green moved into sole possession of eighth place in school history for career receiving yards with 1,475.

Green, one of eight semifinalists this season for the John Mackey Award, entered the night ranked 11th in school history in all-time receiving yards.

Series notes

The Cajuns fell to 6-2 lifetime against FIU. After winning the first six meetings, UL has lost to the Panthers in each of the past two years.

It was the first home loss for the Cajuns in the series.

Extra points

UL quarterback Chris Masson, safety Lionel Stokes, free safety Maurice Rolle Jr. and tight end Ladarius Green served as team captains. Safety Ashlyn Parker, quarterback Wesley Carroll and center Brad Serini represented FIU. The Cajuns won the pre-game coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff.

"» The start of the game was delayed five minutes as band equipment was moved from one side of the field to another end "» UL senior left tackle Colin Windsor (ankle) did not dress out. Sophomore Leonardo Bates took his place in the starting lineup "» UL freshman tailback Aaron Spikes fumbled on the opening kickoff. Freshman Rob Walker started at tailback "» Spikes cut open his knee after a 14-yard run in the second quarter but did return after receiving treatment on the sideline "» Senior linebacker Daylon McCoy hurt his back early in the second quarter but later returned "» The Cajuns fell to 2-18 when allowing at least 31 points since the 2008 season.
