LAFAYETTE- Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns announced on Tuesday that Gerald Broussard has been named defensive line coach. His hiring is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.
Broussard, a 1984 Louisiana-Lafayette graduate, replaces Shawn Quinn, who resigned to pursue other opportunities. Head coach Rickey Bustle, entering his seventh season at the helm of the Cajuns football program, now sees his staff completed following the additions of Broussard and quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator Jorge Munoz, who was hired on Jan. 25. “I’m glad to have a family member join our coaching staff,” Bustle said. “Gerald’s been around Ragin’ Cajuns football for a long time it’s like he’s family. “He brings a lot of passion to our team.” Broussard’s coaching career has spanned three decades, beginning in 1984. From 1986-1998, Broussard worked at his alma mater under then-head coach Nelson Stokley. While with the Cajuns, Broussard helped UL enjoy seven winning seasons, including a pair of Big West Conference championships. Broussard was the offensive line coach from 1986-91 before coaching the tackles and tight ends from 1992-95. He coached the wide receivers from 1996-98, which were the final three seasons for current Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Stokley. In addition, the Cajuns set the school record for receiving yards in 1996, with 3,076. A Lafayette native, Broussard spent the last three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Stephen F. Austin. He coached the offensive line in 2005-06 and the tight ends, H-backs and fullbacks in 2007. During his first season with the ‘Jacks, Broussard’s offense finished 13th in the nation in passing and 21st in the nation in total offense. The team surrendered only 16 sacks in 2005, despite throwing the ball an average of 43 times per game and six ‘Jacks received All-Southland Conference recognition. Broussard spent the prior three seasons with McNeese State, where he served as offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. The Cowboys won or shared three straight conference titles with Broussard on the staff and were the top scoring team in the SLC in 2002, averaging 31.9 points per game. Stops at Tennessee-Martin as the offensive line and strength coach in 2000 and Scottsdale CC as the offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 1999 preceded his time in Lake Charles. Broussard’s coaching career started in 1984 as a graduate assistant/tight ends coach for the Cajuns under Sam Robertson. The following season saw Broussard become the offensive line coach at West Alabama for one season before returning to Lafayette. He was a three-year letterwinner at offensive line for the Cajuns from 1979-83. Broussard was the recipient of the J.C. “Dutch” Reinhardt Award in 1983 for comeback athlete, the same year in which he was named team captain. In 1995, Broussard was named to the Cajuns first team All 25-Year Team by the Lafayette Daily Advertiser. Broussard was a standout football and baseball player at Lafayette High School where he was inducted into the Lions Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Julie, are the parents of a son, John Joseph.
