Football: Broadway takes bowl MVP honors – video and photo galleries included 12/23/12

Tim Buckley, Daily Advertiser, Dec. 23, 2012

NEW ORLEANS — Ragin’ Cajuns quarterback Terrance Broadway did some reading during the past week, and it wasn’t just the East Carolina defense.

Rather, it was what said defense had to say about him and their plans for him in Saturday’s New Orleans Bowl game against UL.

"They said they were gonna try to key in on me," Broadway said, "so I knew that was gonna open up the outside with our receivers.

"And Coach Johnson (Jay Johnson, UL’s offensive coordinator) did a really good job dialing up those plays to attack them. "» We tried to go after them, and we were successful with it."

The end result was both a New Orleans Bowl win for the Cajuns, and a New Orleans Bowl MVP award win for Broadway, the redshirt sophomore transfer from the University of Houston and Capitol High in Baton Rouge.

Broadway finished 21-of-32 for 316 yards and one touchdown, and ran 15 times for 114 yards and another TD, in UL’s 43-34 win over ECU at the Superdome.

"I thought Terrance was on fire," Cajuns head coach Mark Hudspeth said.

"He understands their offense, and did a good job of running and maintaining what Mark wanted offensively," Pirates coach Ruffin McNeill added. "He’s a good quarterback, and did a good job leading his team."

Broadway’s prize for winning MVP is a colorful, funky helmet ‘trophy’ designed by prominent New Orleans artist Tuna Seither, a UL alum.

It will be framed and shipped soon to the Cajun QB.

But Broadway’s other prize Saturday was what he was able to do for his young son, also named Terrance.

"I work hard every day just knowing that he’s depending on me every day to supply for him," Broadway said, "so the reason why I play is mainly because of him and what he means to me."
