Football: Broadway Named To Manning Award Watch List

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Louisiana junior quarterback Terrance Broadway is one of 30 quarterbacks named to the watch list for the 2013 Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, which was released on Friday.

The list was selected in conjunction with the release of ESPN s new Total Quarterback Rating (QBR).  The top 30 returning quarterbacks according to the QBR make up the Watch List.  The winner will still be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowls.

This is always an exciting time of year for college football players, coaches and fans,  Archie Manning said.  ESPN has come up with an interesting new statistical measure of quarterbacks so we decided to use the QBR to determine our Watch List, but we want to remind everyone that every quarterback in the country remains eligible to win this honor and we re looking forward to seeing how things play out on the field.

Earlier this summer, Broadway was also named to the watch list for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.

Being included on this award list means a lot to me because growing up in Louisiana, I have always admired the Manning family and have tried to play like them,  Broadway said.   With practice starting next week, it is important that my teammates and I stay focused on the goals ahead.  I have said it before, it doesn t matter where you start, it is where you finish.

Broadway is coming off a sophomore season that saw him earn honorable mention All-Sun Belt honors after setting school records for total offense (3,611) and completion percentage (.654).  He completed 206-of-305 passes to rank third in the Sun Belt in passing efficiency (153.3), fourth in total offense (277.8), seventh in passing average (218.6) and eighth in rushing (59.2).

Broadway s 769 yards rushing in 2012, which included three 100-yard rushing games, ranks him sixth among returning quarterbacks in the FBS ranks.

Named the Newcomer of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, Broadway led the Sun Belt in league games only in total offense (337.9) and passing efficiency (164.6) and was fourth in both passing average (264.2) and rushing (73.6)

Broadway started the 2012 season as the backup to Blaine Gautier, but a pair of injuries sidelined Gautier for most of the year allowing Broadway to take over.

A starter in nine of the 13 games, Broadway capped off his first year at Louisiana by rushing for 108 yards and passing for 316 yards to earn MVP honors in the Ragin  Cajuns 43-34 win over East Carolina in the RL Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel won the Manning Award in 2012.  Manziel, along with 2012 finalists Tajh Boyd (Clemson), Jordan Lynch (Northern Illinois), Marcus Mariota (Oregon), AJ McCarron (Alabama), Braxton Miller (Ohio State) and Aaron Murray (Georgia) each return this fall and are included on the watch list.

Broadway and the Ragin  Cajuns report for preseason practice on Sunday (Aug. 4) with the first practice slated for Monday (Aug. 5) and the 2013 season opener scheduled for Aug. 31 at Arkansas.
