Football: Anthems for the Cajuns – two bands offer new songs for UL’s bowl game photo galleries

The Ragin’ Cajuns’ appearance in tonight’s New Orleans Bowl has the entire city singing. Fans aren’t just singing the university alma mater, though.

Local bands The Mageez and Slackjaw Jane have each released a new song to commemorate the football team’s journey to this weekend’s matchup.

The Mageez redid a former favorite and fashioned it into "Doin’ Big Easy the HUD Way."

This band consists of brothers Bo, Ben and Michael McGehee. The siblings grew up taking piano lessons and watching every type of sport at UL. Bo and Michael’s inner fan were waiting for some Louisiana football glory to hit Lafayette.

"We’ve been waiting for this kind of action for a long time," Michael said.

Thanks to the help of a suggestion from DJ Fast Eddie of KQIS 102.1, the band redid its older track, "Doin’ Big Easy the Hard Way."

Singer Bo McGehee said the track was the band’s outlet to show appreciation for head coach Mark Hudspeth’s tremendous year.

"For me, coach Hudspeth is a way for (the football team) to be put on the map on a national scale," Bo said. "This is our way of saying, ‘Stay here. We’re behind you 100 percent.’ He’s the reason we’re going to New Orleans."

The song is not unlike something you would hear at a Crescent City tailgate. Bo described the band’s sound as a combination of all types of Louisiana music.

"We spent 10 years in New Orleans," Bo said. "I used to work at the House of Blues. I’ve seen everybody play. There has been a lot of great music come from here. We’re doing our take on it."

On the other hand, local rock band Slackjaw Jane wrote an original tune after a quick jam session.

Lead singer Steven Menard said the band cut "Let’s Go! (Vermilion Anthem)" within a week. Guitarist Tim Benson, a UL graduate, was watching a game replay when he suggested the song idea to the band.

"Everybody was on board," Menard said.

When writing the song, the band didn’t want to do anything "cheesy," he said.

"We didn’t want it to be one of those school songs where you listen to it and you go, ‘What were they thinking?’"

Slackjaw Jane cut the song on a Sunday afternoon. The following Friday, Menard heard the song being used during a KLFY broadcast.

"It went pretty fast," Menard said. "It was just something we use to celebrate the season. I think the area deserves something like this game. All week long, this is all you hear about. The closer we get to the game, more people are listening to the song."

While The Mageez song is more celebratory, Slackjaw Jane’s single is more about the team preparing for battle. Listen to both tracks online at theadvertiser.com.

Tonight, both bands will play a show following the New Orleans Bowl.

The Mageez will play at 10:30 p.m. at the New Orleans House of Blues Parish Room, 225 Decatur St. Tickets for the show are $10. Ages 18 and older.

Slackjaw Jane will play at Route 92, at 2600 E. Milton Ave. in Youngsville. 857-5025.
