Football: Andre Nunez Named Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week For Ragin’ Cajuns

David Collins, Athletics Communications Assistant

LAFAYETTE – Senior quarterback Andre Nunez (Pacoima, Calif.) tied a school record with five touchdown passes, and he threw a career-high for 315 yards completing 19 of 25 passes on his way to earning Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week, leading Louisiana Football to a 66-38 win over New Mexico State on Oct. 13,

SECOND TIME IN A ROW: For the first time since 2008 Louisiana had a player named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week, with sophomore running back Elijah Mitchell getting the nod last week.  In 2008 Tyrell Fenroy was named SBC Offensive Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks on Sept. 29 – Oct. 6.

NUNEZ IS ON FIRE: Nunez’s five touchdowns tied the school record for touchdowns thrown in a single game, set by Jake Delhomme in 1996 against Northern Illinois, and the 315 yards was the 22nd best performance in school history.  The 300-plus yards that Nunez threw for was the 34th time that a Louisiana quarterback has thrown for 300 yards in a single game in school history.

According to ESPN’s QBR rating, Nunez finished with the third-best in the FBS this past weekend, recording a rating of 96.8.  His passing efficiency of 247.8 was the second-best in the FBS this past weekend and the 10th-best by any quarterback in the country this season.

When considering conference numbers, Nunez threw for the most yards in the conference over the weekend and he became only the fifth quarterback in the Sun Belt to throw for at least 300 yards in a game this season.

SPORTSWRITERS AND PANELISTS AGREE: Nunez was also named the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association Offensive Player of the Week to add to his SBC honors.  Along with the LSWA honor, Nunez was named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 list, College Football Performance Awards National Performer of Week 7 award list and was named to the Eight Manning Award Stars of the Week.
