Football: A true blackout – black uniforms waiting in locker room after warmups – photo galleries

Tim Buckley, The Advertiser, November 18, 2012

Quarterback Terrance Broadway said UL Ragin’ Cajun players lobbied coach Mark Hudspeth over and over all season, but they had no idea they were coming.

All-black uniforms, that is.

"We were always, like, ‘Coach, we need the black uniforms; we need the black uniforms,’ " Broadway said. "But it never came through."

Actually, they did — and they actually arrived last Aug. 1, unbeknownst to the Cajuns.

On "blackout" night at Cajun Field, the Cajuns wore black pants, black jerseys (that they changed into minutes before kickoff, after coming out in red for pregame activities) and black helmets featuring a fleur-de-lis design for their win over Western Kentucky.

The jerseys had no numbers on the front, but instead a large fleur-de-lis.

On the back were no family names, but rather one of four different French words meaning — in English — unity, fight, pride and believe.

"We had them picked out from Day 1, (and knew) we were gonna wear them against Western Kentucky," Hudspeth said. "We were gonna pull out all the stops to win this one, regardless of where we were in the season — undefeated, or 0-8, 0-10, whatever the case may be.

"I thought it was a clean look. But we’re not looking to change our colors to black. So don’t nobody panic there. It was a one-time game.

"But players like it — and if it fires them up an makes them play hard, man, I’m all for it," the Cajun coach added. "And if it helps you get some recruits, I’m all for that too."

UL slot receiver Harry Peoples was as shocked as Broadway to see the uniforms waiting when the Cajuns returned to their lockerroom after warmups.

"Words can’t explain," Peoples said, who called the uniforms prized "swag."

Said Hudspeth to Peoples afterward: "We held a good secret, didn’t we?"

Movin’ on up

With his 23-yard field goal Saturday, UL senior Brett Baer moved out of a tie with ex-NFL kicker Rafael Septien (1974) and alone into 3rd place on UL’s list for most FGs in a season with 16.

Baer also is second on the same list, with 18 in 2011. John Roveto has the record with 19 in 1977.

Baer also had four extra points Saturday, moving him past Sean Comiskey (103) and alone into second place on UL’s career PATs-made list 105 — just four shy of passing leader Drew Edmiston (108).

Participation report

Backup slot receiver Bradley Brown (undisclosed) and reserve defensive lineman Jalen Fields (undisclosed) both did not play, but reserve offensive lineman Terry Johnson (undisclosed) returned after missing UL’s win one week earlier at Florida.

Senior quarterback Blaine Gautier, who dressed for the first since breaking two bones in his throwing had on Sept. 29, also did not play.

Harris hurt

The Cajuns had no injury update Saturday night on running back Alonzo Harris, who was taken to the lockerroom on a cart after rushing 10 times for 104 yards.

Lagniappe

Safety Trevence Patt, a Breaux Bridge High product, made his third straight career start in the UL secondary on Saturday. "» The Cajuns’ defense opened with a four-man front for a second straight game, going with Cordian Hagans, Justin Hamilton, Christian Ringo and Emeka Onyenekwu on the line and Justin Hamilton, Jake Molbert and Le’Marcus Gibson at linebacker in the 4-3. Onyenekwu, Anderson, Gautier and Peoples were the Cajun captains. "» In the house: Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson. "» According to the Monroe News-Star, reps from both the Independence Bowl and the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl in St. Petersburg, Fla., watched UL Monroe beat North Texas on Saturday.
