Edgar Glynn Abel: Spotlight on Former Athlete – photos includedEdgar Glynn Abel: Spotlight on Former Athlete (photos included) Click on the Spotlight on Former Athlete banner on the right of the AN News Box and be taken to the profile of Edgar Glynn Abel, a three-sport letterman during the late 1930s and named a little All-American in 1938. Abel went on to serve as the university’s Dean of Men from 1945-1969. He joined the UL staff as assistant dean of men in 1939, leaving that position to serve as a naval officer during World War II. Glynn Abel Living Memorial Established by the Athletic Network Abel is credited for playing a leadership role in the peaceful integration of the university in the mid-1950s. He was a strong supporter of the minor sports at UL, including weightlifting and tennis. Abel was the winner of the Lafayette Civic Cup in 1989. Sid Ory "Mr. Ragin’ Cajun" and Glynn Abel Athletic Network Footnote: Buddy Short wrote about one of his fond memories of Dean Abel on March 22, 2008 (the date of Abel’s passing) entitled, "Goodbye Old Friend." The anecdote, complete with supporting pictures of the flowers are found in the AN News story on Abel. It will later be moved to the History of UL Athletics link, in the Lagniappe page.
He was a life-long avid supporter of UL and would often be seen at university events.
