CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University Sports Hall of Fame is the highest honor bestowed upon a student-athlete at DSU and Tuesday the Sports Hall of Fame Committee officially announced its 2011 Induction Class. This year’s inductees include Jeannie Crnkovic Beach (Softball), Dee Haynes (Baseball), Billy Hood (Football), Dr. Mandy Lee O’Neill (Women’s Swimming), Jason Page (Baseball), Robert Pannell (Golf) and Elizabeth Wallace Woods (Women’s Basketball). The Sports Hall of Fame will also honor its 2011 Distinguished Statesman, Mike “Tolly” Tolleson. DSU will also induct two former Statesmen into the Alumni Coaches Hall of Fame, Ed Rich and Beryl Shipley. John Elliott, DSU registrar, will also receive the Athletic Alumni Appreciation Award and Dr. Wayne Blansett, Vice President for Student Affairs, will receive the Lawrence L. Stewart Athletic Service Award, but the duo will receive their honors at the annual Athletic Awards Banquet on April 28 at 6 p.m. The Sports Hall of Fame will officially welcome the 2011 class and recognize all award winners on Friday, April 1 at the annual Alumni Coaches and Sports Hall of Fame Banquet. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. inside Walter Sillers Coliseum. A reception for the honorees and their guests will be held at the Hugh Ellis Walker Alumni House at 5 p.m. Biographical sketches and information on the 2011 Sports Hall of Fame and Alumni Coaches Hall of Fame inductees is below. For more information on the Alumni Coaches and Sports Hall of Fame Banquet, please call DSU Athletics at (662) 846-4300. Mike “Tolly Tolleson – Distinguished Statesman Award – Anniston, Ala. His college jobs included DSU, West Alabama, Louisiana Tech, Arkansas, Stanford, Texas-El Paso, Southern Miss, Louisiana State and the last 13 years at the University of Texas, where he was the defensive line coach for the 2005 NCAA National Champion Longhorns. Tolleson’s teams appeared in 20 bowls games, including 13 straight at Texas. He was a nominee for the 2002 Frank Broyles Assistant Coach of the Year and a former recipient of the Special Teams Coordinator of the Year Award in 2009. He coached in two BCS National Championship games with Texas in 2005 and 2010. Six of his former players at UT are currently in the NFL. Tolleson currently serves as a special assistant for the University of Texas Department of Athletics. Jeannie Crnkovic Beach – Softball – Ferriday, La. While at DSU, Beach was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-South Region Teams in 1997 and 1998. She also received the DSU Golden Glove Award following the 1997 season. Dee Haynes – Baseball – Columbus, Miss. He also holds season record for average (.444), RBIs (92), home runs (26), total bases (197), doubles (T-25) and runs scored (88). The power-hitting outfielder also connected on four home runs in four at-bats versus Southern Arkansas in the GSC Tournament. He also helped the Statesmen claim the 2000 GSC championship with his work at the plate and his 69 home runs rank second all-time in NCAA Division II history. One of the most decorated players in DSU and Gulf South Conference history, Haynes was a three-time ABCA All-American, All-GSC and All-South Central Region selection. A 14th round draft pick by the St. Louis Cardinals, Haynes played eight seasons of Minor League Baseball for the organization, including three at AAA Memphis. Billy Hood – Football – Calhoun City, Miss. The speedy receiver was awarded the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in 1975 and was a two-time Academic All-American for the Statesmen in 1974 and 1975. In 1975, Hood served as Team Captain and was named to the All-GSC Team. He also claimed the Charles S. Kerg Senior Student-Athlete of the Year at DSU and was inducted into the Student Hall of Fame in 1975. Mandy Lee O’Neill – Oshawa, Ontario – Swimming & Diving She was named the 1999 NCAA Woman of the Year for Mississippi and a national finalist for the NCAA that same year. In 1996-1997, she served as a Team Captain. Lee-O’Neill was named the Most Valuable Swimmer at DSU in 1998 and she also claimed the 1996 DSU Workout Award. A standout in the classroom as well, Mandy Lee O’Neill was a four-time Academic All-American, four-time Academic All-NSISC selection and 1999 Charles S. Kerg Senior Student-Athlete of the Year. She finished her four years at DSU rankings No. 1 in her class with a 4.0 GPA. Jason Page – Starkville, Miss. – Baseball Page led the Statesmen in batting and RBIs in 1994 (.414/52), 1995 (.396/47) and 1996 (.383/61). He ranks third all-time in career batting average .395, while ranking third in doubles (59) and 10th in career hits (236). He was named to the ABCA All-American team in 1996 and he was a three-time ABCA All-South Central Region Team selection. He grabbed the 1995 N.L. Cassibry Most Valuable Player Award at DSU. Also a good student, Page was a three-time GSC Academic Honor Roll recipient as well. Robert Pannell – Memphis, Tenn. – Golf Always an advocate for golf in Mississippi, Pannell has served as an officer for the Mississippi Golf Association and MS Junior Golf Association. He has played on six Mississippi Cup Teams and is currently the Mississippi 4-Ball Champion. He has won the Cleveland Country Club 4-Ball Tournament five times and twice helped his team to the CCC 6-Man Scramble title. Elizabeth Wallace Woods – Silver Creek, Miss. – Women’s Basketball A native of Silver Creek, she received the 1989 Lady Statesmen Defensive Player of the Year Award and was a 1990 Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities selection. She is often credited with being the emotional leader of the Lady Statesmen, willing the team to the 1990 national title. Ed Rich – Independence, Miss. – Alumni Coaches Hall of Fame A seven time District Baseball Coach of the Year, Rich led Southaven to two MHSAA State Class 5A Championships in 1999 and 2000, including a third place finish in 2003. The Mississippi Coaches Association and The Clarion Ledger named Rich Mississippi Baseball Coach of the Year in 1999. He holds a 315-103 record all-time on the diamond and in 1998 took over as Southaven High head football coach. Over the past three seasons, Rich has led the Chargers to consecutive MHSAA Class 5A Playoff appearances. Beryl Shipley – Kinsport, Tenn. – Alumni Coaches Hall of Fame Shipley served as head coach of the Ragin’ Cajuns from 1957-1973, guiding the team to the NCAA “Sweet 16” in 1972, where ULL finished the year ranked No. 7 nationally. He also led ULL to a No. 8 national ranking in 1973. He wrapped up his career at ULL with a 296-129 record, which still ranks No. 1 all-time for the Ragin’ Cajuns. He is a two-time Louisiana Collegiate Coach of the Year in 1972 and 1973 and was chosen as the Gulf States Conference Coach of the Year four times. After his time at Louisiana-Lafayette, Shipley coached the San Diego Conquistadors of the American Basketball Association in 1975. He is a member of the Hinds Junior College Hall of Fame and Louisiana Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. Prior to becoming a collegiate basketball coach, Shipley coached high school basketball, football and baseball in Morgan City, Miss., and was head basketball and assistant football coach at Starkville High School.
