Cross Country:Cajuns Finish Fourth In Men’s, Women’s Race At SBC Championships

Anna Devitt, Matthew Rice, Beau Robinson earn All-SBC Honors

MOBILE, Ala. – Anna Katherine Devitt and freshman Beau Robinson each earned top-10 finishes in their respective races and the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns cross country team finished fourth in both the men’s and women’s event at the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships on Sunday at the USS Alabama Battlefield Memorial Park.
 
South Alabama, behind a 1-2 finish from Christoph Graf and Micheal Pienaar, claimed the men’s title in the 8K race with 53 points to edge Appalachian State by two points. UT Arlington was third in the nine-team race with 61 points followed by Louisiana (90), UALR (130), Texas State (152), Arkansas State (157), ULM (201) and Troy (249).
 
In the women’s 5K race, UT Arlington placed four runners in the top 11 and claimed its first SBC championship with 51 points. Applachian State (60), Arkansas State (64), Louisiana (135) and Georgia State (150) rounded out the top five. UALR (163), South Alabama (174), Texas State (182), Troy (198), Georgia Southern (274) and ULM (332) rounded out the 11-team field.

Devitt, who was a third-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection in 2013, claimed second-team honors after completing the 5K course in 17:27.9 to finish ninth overall. Ashley Irwin finished 20th overall for the Ragin’ Cajuns (17:50.5), Kelci Lyons was 34th (18.35.5), Claire Hodges was 36th (18:45.6) and Danielle Castaldi placed 38th (18:45.6). Freshman Lindsay LaGarde finished 59th (19:49.4) for Louisiana, Kaylei Esfeller was 63rd (19:54.1) and freshman Courtney Broussard was 66th (20:09.3).
 
Beau Robinson paced the Ragin’ Cajuns on the men’s side, earning second-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors after finishing ninth overall in 25:01.9. Matthew Rice earned third-team honors after finishing 14th overall in 25:18.9 with freshman Bryce Robinson placing 16th in 25:23.4, Logan Pearce 22nd (25:45.8), and freshman Logan LaGarde finishing 29th (26:13.9).
 
Dylan Heck finished 35th for the Ragin’ Cajuns crossing the line in 26:33.4, Jacob Chicola was 52nd (27:34.7) and Sean Bezdek was 53rd (27:39.0).
 
Louisiana will return to action on Nov. 14 when it competes in the NCAA South Central Regional Championship in Fayetteville, Ark.
