Sun Belt Weekly Release
NEW ORLEANS – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns cross country performer Ashley Irwin was selected on Wednesday as the Sun Belt Conference Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week in an announcement by the league office.
Irwin, a junior from Mandeville, claimed first-place honors last Friday at the 40th annual Azalea City Classic, hosted by South Alabama, after covering the 6K course in 20:36.39. Irwin took nearly two minutes off her previous mark (22:26.5) on the Mobile County Fairgrounds course and was part of a unit that placed two runners in the top three and five in the top 16.
She helped the Ragin’ Cajuns to a second-place finish in the seven-team event, finishing behind UAB, ranked No. 15 in the South Region according to the USTFCCCA.
Louisiana will return to action on Sept. 27 when it travels to Lake Charles to compete in the McNeese Cowboy Stampede.
