Copy of Track & Field: Jasmine Manuel Receives Third Athlete of the Week Honor

LAFAYETTE – Jasmine Manuel’s outstanding senior season continues to pay dividends as the Ragin’ Cajuns triple jump specialist picked up her third Sun Belt Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honor on Wednesday.
Manuel returned to the outdoor scene for the first time since the Texas Relays (March 30) with a leap of 13.05m/42-9 ¾ which landed her second place in the triple jump invitational at the LSU Alumni Gold last Saturday.
The Hammond native leaped further than 13.00m/42-8 for the fourth straight outing, continuing a streak that dates back to the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in February.
She was the top collegian in the event at Bernie Moore Track Stadium in Baton Rouge on Saturday, besting Tulane’s Estefany Cruz by nine inches. Manuel beat out competitors from South Florida, Ole Miss and nationally renowned programs LSU and Texas A&M.
“Jasmine continues to excel,” head coach Lon Badeaux said. “It’s a great honor for her to be chosen again by the league.”
Manuel picked up the weekly honor during the indoor portion of the campaign following a school indoor record performance in the triple jump at the Arkansas State Invitational on Jan. 27. She was the recipient of the honor on March 28 after turning in a personal best in the long jump at the LSU Relays (March 23).
As the outdoor season comes to a close, Manuel continues to top the Sun Belt Conference outdoor performance list in the women’s triple jump with her leap of 13.29m/43-7 ¼ at the Texas Relays on March 29. The mark also ranks Top 10 both nationally and in the NCAA Division I East Region.
The Ragin’ Cajuns track and field squad hosts the Cole-Lancon Invitational at the Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility on Saturday, April 28 in what will be the final meet of the 2012 regular season. It’s the first of two upcoming meets at the facility as Louisiana is set to host the Sun Belt Conference Championships Friday-Sunday, May 11-13.
