Click on the Spotlight on Former Athlete banner on the right of the AN News Box and be taken to the profile of Christian Keener "Red" Cagle, a three-sport letterman during the mid-1920s who went on to be a three-time all-American in football at West Point. He played three seasons for the New York Giants professional football team. Sometimes he played with a loose chin strap or no helmet and was often referred to by the media as "Onward Christian" because of his running and passing skills.
 In 1925 Cagle scored 108 points while rushing for 1,048 yards and passing for 904. In the LSU game, he completed 22 of 33 passes. Gagle drew large crowds at the SLI home games played on Institute Field located in the "Quad." A picture of the 1923 team is located in the football photo gallery.
The information about his life and acheivements are included in Christian Cagle’s profile (electronic scrapbook) in the Athletic Network. His life ended shortly after a tragic accident in 1942, at age 37, when he fell in a Manhattan subway stairwell and died three days later of a fractured skull.
Bruce Brown graciously allowed the Athletic Network to reprint the chapter on Christian Cagle in his 1980 book entitled "Prides of Acadiana" a copyrighted enterprise.

Cagle’s monument is located inside Gate A at Cajun Field as a lasting memorial to one of our all-time greats. It reads, " Christian Keener Cagle; Born May 1, 1904-Died December 23, 1942; A Native of Merryville, Louisiana; Outstanding Athlete; Southwestern Louisiana Institute; 1922-26; All-American Halfback; U.S. Military Academy; 1927-1928-1929; Captain of the Army Team 1929; College Football Player of the Year 1929; Helms Athletic Foundation; Member of Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame For College Football- 1953; Member of National Football Hall of Fame 1954; This monument was erected by the Alumni Association and the Alumni "S" Club of Southwestern Louisiana Institute, Lafayette, Louisiana Athletic Network footnote: Cagle was injured on December 23, 1942 and died on December 26, 1942. Special acknowledgement is extended Stephen David (Baseball ’76 & ’77) and Dr. Authement’s office for providing information on the Cagle monument identified in Prides of Acadiana. Cagle was named College Football Player of the Year in 1929, an award which was given another name in 1935, the Heisman Trophy.
