Cajuns Hold Football Banquet
Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns held their annual post-season football banquet on Saturday evening at the Hilton Towers.
The banquet began with the 2009 highlight film, followed by head coach Rickey Bustle honoring the seven Cajuns on the 2009 All-Sun Belt team – senior offensive lineman Brad Bustle (First Team), senior center Chris Fisher (First Team), junior punter Spencer Ortego (First Team), sophomore tight end Ladarius Green (Second Team), senior linebacker Antwyne Zanders (Second Team), sophomore cornerback Dwight Bentley (Honorable Mention) and junior linebacker Grant Fleming (Honorable Mention). Tyler Albrecht was honored with the 5th Annual Robert E. Trahan Special Achievement Award. The award is given to an individual, through the help of his teammates, for a special achievement during the 2009 season. Albrecht made his first career field goal attempt – a 48-yard kick in the closing seconds – to help the Cajuns defeat Kansas State 17-15 on Sept. 12. Marlin Miller was given the Mr. Hardy F. Edmiston, Jr. Sportsmanship Award. Former Cajuns offensive lineman Marty Cannon (1994-97) presented senior defensive end Chris Lanaux and junior offensive lineman Jonathan Decoster with the Grid Iron Alumni Award. Defensive coordinator Kevin Fouquier then presented the TNT Awards to Bentley and Zanders. Zanders earned the tackles portion thanks to a team-leading 103 tackles. Bentley grabbed the turnovers portion with four takeaways (three interceptions and a fumble recovery) during the season. The Cajuns Spirit Award went to freshman wide receiver Ashton LeBlanc on offense and freshman defensive lineman Barry Sterling on defense. The biggest hits of the season, as per player vote, were Green on offense, junior cornerback Orkeys Auriene on defense and Zanders on special teams. The MVP awards, as voted by the players, went to Green on offense and Zanders on defense. The Brian Mitchell Special Forces MVP was Ortego. Player-voted team captains for the 2009 season were Bustle and Fisher on offense, Fleming and Zanders on defense and senior deep snapper Scott Hayes on special teams. The banquet came to an end with farewell recognition to the 20 members of the 2009 senior class.
