Former Gov. Kathleen Blanco, who died Sunday after a long battle with cancer, will lie in state in the Capitol Thursday before her body is transported back to Lafayette for events there Friday and Saturday. Blanco, who was 76, will be brought to the Capitol’s Memorial Hall about 12:30 p.m. Thursday following a 10 a.m. memorial service in her honor at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in downtown Baton Rouge. (Photo: Advertiser file photo) Her body will be brought up the Capitol steps and will lie in state in front of the closed Senate doors in Memorial Hall for public viewing from 1 to 6 p.m. There will be a gun-firing salute and the playing of "Taps" before her body is moved into the Capitol. Members of the public will be able to pay their respects by entering the Capitol from either of two entrances on the ground floor before walking upstairs to Memorial Hall. On Friday from 12:30 to 8 p.m. a public visitation is scheduled at St. John the Evangelist Cathedral (Cathedral Hall) in Lafayette. There will be a recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3 p.m. Friday in Cathedral Hall and a prayer service from 6 to 7 p.m. Public visitation will continue from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday in Cathedral Hall followed the funeral Mass from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Louisiana Public Broadcasting will livestream the funeral, but won’t broadcast it on TV. Blanco, who was governor from 2004 to 2008, will forever be linked to Hurricane Katrina, the infamous storm that devastated New Orleans. Katrina was followed just weeks later by Hurricane Rita, which hit Lake Charles and moved through Acadiana.
