Blackjack Landry Memorial Scholarship: Danielle Rogers 2017-2018 RecipientDanielle Rogers Biography Submitted by Ken Blanchard, Football 1968-70 Danielle Rogers is a 22 year old who resides in Lafayette and is a full- time student at UL. Danielle played basketball, ran track and cross country at Northside High School and graduated at the top of her class while also participating as a Manager for the Northside football team. She earned a scholarship to Xavier University where she excelled as an athlete on the track and cross country teams. Danielle was named to the GCAC First Team, All Conference Cross Country Team as a freshman. But a knee reconstruction and poor academic performance ended her athletic career and she left Xavier and returned to Lafayette. Subsequently, Danielle enrolled at UL and serves as a manager for the Football and Softball teams. She says, “Being an equipment manager has given me a second chance and it is something I am determined to not let get away from me. My grades, life, and the way I feel about myself have improved incredulously, and it is all because of this opportunity.” Danielle is a Junior majoring in Secondary Education with a minor in Biology and maintains a 2.50 GPA. The Bill “Blackjack” Landry Memorial Endowed Athletic Scholarship was established in 2011 and annually awards financial assistance to Student Managers. “Blackjack” was the football equipment manager at UL from 1963 until his death in 1998, serving five (5) head coaches and hundreds of athletes.
