Bill "Blackjack" Landry Golf Scramble at Acadian Hills & PBA-GIA team for Spring Game

Update of April 3, 2011
Dear Gridiron Alumni members, friends and supporters,

It’s GAME WEEK!

The Bill "Blackjack" Landry Memorial is Friday morning.  Check in begins at 6:45 with the shotgun start at 7:30.  We are loaded with teams so get there early so we can get the scramble rolling.  We have a super lunch planned for everyone, gifts, door prizes and we’re building a great auction list – autographed Cajun gear, UL baseball ticket packages (the Cajun baseball squad is on FIRE right now), gift certificates, a new putter and an autographed Peyton Manning jersey.  Don’t forget $100 gift cards to the Acadian Hills pro shop and Golfballs.com courtesy of Maniac and Duke for the winners of the long drive and closest to the hole.  Wear shirts with collars and soft spikes.

Thursday night we have a kickoff get together at Dix Almost Famous Daiquiri’s on Kaliste Saloom Road.  Friday night is the Ragin Cajun/Bulldogs football reunion at Pete’s.  Pete’s is providing a big seafood jambalaya but for those of you that have been away a while, they still make a great Big Pete burger that you could order.  Game film and highlights will be rolling on the big screen.

Saturday is the spring game which starts at 5.  Former players get in free.  For everyone else there is a small fee.  Expect a big crowd this year!

One of our most active, new member groups comes from the 1970s era.  They call themselves the Past Ballplayers Association and they are a top notch group.  Jimmy Poche and his group have invited the Gridiron Alumni Chapter to tailgate together Saturday from noon to game time.  A jambalaya lunch will be served at 3:00.  The PBA tailgates across the street from the main stage at the southwest entrance.  Call 337-501-0960 if you need to be guided in to visit.  We hope to see every living decade of Cajun football alumni represented this coming Saturday to cheer on the team.

Once the game begins, the Gridiron will move to the south end zone hill to cook for the team.  After the game is over, come over and help serve the team and then meet the guys grinding it out to be champions next season.

Go Cajuns!

Dear Gridiron members and friends,

The Bill "Blackjack" Landry Memorial Golf Scramble is quickly approaching (April 8 at Acadian Hills Country Club) and teams are filling up fast.  This year we are going to help fund the new Nelson Stokley Endowed football scholarship which will one day go to a former UL athlete’s son or in-state player.  This is a great way for the Gridiron Alumni Chapter to impact the football program for many years.  We encourage you all to play (even if you don’t play often – most of us aren’t that good either), offer what you can of a financial or gift donation or chip in to help on the course or with the reunion or team meal we will cook on Saturday, April 9.  No contribution is too small for this effort.  Contact us at gridironalumni@gmail.com or 337-501-0960 to get involved.  You can also learn more at http://gridironalumni.ning.com or get a registration form at www.klfy.com.

Update of March 30

Dear Gridiron Alumni, friends and supporters,

We are just over a week away from the kickoff of the 2011 Blackjack Memorial in honor of long time equipment manager Bill Landry.  The Gridiron Alumni would like to say thanks again to all of you that have preregistered and sponsored this great event.  We are still taking on sponsors and players if you are interested.  For those interested in playing – the course is filling up.  We are at a record number as of today.  Get your forms in ASAP.  A portion of the proceeds this year are going to the Nelson Stokley Endowed Football scholarship.  For a copy of the registration form, log on to www.klfy.com and scroll down to the Gridiron link.

I’d like to give a special thanks to our lunch sponsors – Mr. Causby Hamic and the State Farm Crew of Dan Ater, Ben Archer, Ryan Cade and Mark Lamere.  Because of these guys, and our cooks, Chris Gannon, Clarence Glenn, Jimmy Poche and Tommie Rogers, we are going to have a FEAST!

We have some special prizes and give away items this year – Golfballs.com is giving away a putter at our event, Maniac and Duke are giving away $100 gift certificates to the winners of the long drive and closest to the hole contests, Allied Discount Tires is giving away a $100 vehicle service gift certificate and Peyton Manning is donating an autographed jersey.  We will also have prizes for the top teams – and the worst.

Reminder: Acadian Hills Country Club requires shirts with collars and soft spikes on the course.

We can’t wait to see all of you at the 2011 Bill "Blackjack" Landry Memorial.  Get ready for a fun filled weekend.

Sincerely,

Marty Cannon

Update of March 23 Sent to the AN by Marty Cannon

First of all, thanks to all of you that have signed up already for this event on April 8.  The response has been phenomenal and this is going to be a great event!

A few updates to the tournament for those of you that are playing:

The long drive and closest to the hole competitions have gotten a new sponsor.  I’d like to introduce Maniac and Duke’s Big Hit Hole: In Memory of Theron "Big Mo" Harrison #36 and Maniac and Duke’s Party on the Green: In Memory of William Carter Shults #87.  Winners of each of these contest, and they will be closely monitored, will receive a $100 gift card.

We will also have a new event, the KC Stampede: In Memory of Kenyon Cotton.  For a $40 team donation, your team can advance to the 150 yards from hole marker instead of starting at the tee box.  Friends and teammates of KC have sponsored this hole.

There are still some openings…

We still have openings and sponsorship opportunities for the 2011 Blackjack Memorial.  Players get a goody bag, breakfast, basket of balls to warm up with, entry into the Maniac and Duke contests, awards, soft drinks and adult beverages and a lunch cooked up by Chris Gannon and Clarence Glenn.  Log on to www.klfy.com and click the Gridiron Alumni link to the registration page.

For those that cannot play but would like to come for the lunch, we ask for a $5 donation and an RSVP to let us know you’re coming and would like to eat.

Pre-tournament kickoff party…

Dix Almost Famous Daiquiris in Lafayette is hosting us for a pre-tournament kickoff party for those that come in on Thursday, April 7, and need a bite to eat and cold refreshment to go with the old football stories.  Dix is now owned by a group of former players and we thank them for the opportunity to host this at their drinking hole.

Football reunion…

The 2011 UL football reunion will take place at Pete’s on Johnston, Friday night, April 8.  Mark is providing a seafood jambalaya for all of us and old game and highlight films on their TVs.

Spring game…

The UL spring game is at 5 PM on Saturday, April 9.  We are working on tailgating information for you all and will post that as soon as possible.  We will be cooking for the team that afternoon.  We feed over 150 players, managers, trainers and coaches.  We can use all the help we can get on this.  Contact Clarence Glenn at 337-319-5045 for more information.

Geaux Cajuns!
