NEW YORK – Former Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s basketball standouts Dwayne Mitchell and Tiras Wade were selected in the 2007 NBA Development League Draft Thursday night.
Mitchell, a first team All-Sun Belt selection in 2006, was taken in the first round with the 14th overall pick by the Iowa Energy. Mitchell is one of the 37 players to score 1,000 points in his career at Louisiana, reaching the milestone during the 2005-06 season. The New Orleans, La. native participated in the NBA summer league with the Miami Heat in 2007. Last season, he played with Paris Basket Racing in France where he averaged 11.1 points and 4.3 rebounds in 32 games. Wade was the 53rd player taken overall with the 14th pick of the fourth round by the Albuquerque Thunderbirds. Wade made the most of his one year with the Ragin’ Cajuns earning Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year honors. The Tampa, Fla. Native averaged 20.3 points in 6.1 rebounds per game during the 2004-05 campaign. Wade finished the 2006-07 season in Venezuela with Panteras de Miranda, averaging 8.6 points in five games. He played briefly in the Dominican Republic with CPN Pueblo Nuevo, averaging 28.0 points and 4.2 rebounds. He started the 2006-07 campaign with Ignis Castelletto Ticino of the Italian League where he averaged 19.2 points and 6.0 rebounds in 13 games. He spent the 2005-06 season in Italy and France, averaging 17.3 points and 5.9 rebounds in 19 games with Curtiriso Casale Monferrato in the Italian League and 5.7 points and 4.0 rebounds in three games with Le Havre in France. The ten players selected by each team in the 2007 D-League Draft will combine with the six to seven players already assigned via allocation, local tryouts or players returning from the previous season. The rosters for each of the league’s 14 teams will be cut to 12 players on Nov. 14. Final 10-man rosters must be set by Nov. 21. Each team will play one preseason game between Nov. 15-20 before the D-League regular season tips off on Nov. 23. Athletic Network Footnote: Both players have profiles posted in the Athletic Network.
