Basketball: Cajundome basketball floor will have new look for UL this season

Tim Buckley, The Advertiser, Oct. 21, 2019

The floor of the Cajundome will have a new look when the UL basketball teams open their 2019-20 seasons.

Out is the swamp mural scene that was introduced in November 2016, three seasons ago, as part of a $21.2 million Cajundome renovation project.

In: a much-cleaner design.

The busy swamp look — somewhat similar to Oregon’s forest floor, a predecessor — had a black border with the Ragin’ Cajuns logo at centercourt. It featured the silhouette of a cypress swamp on Lake Martin.

The old court — liked by some but not all Cajun fans — was designed by Praters Hardwood Floors of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The new look has not yet been publicly unveiled, and its design has not been specifically disclosed by UL.

“We intended for the next reiteration of the floor to have a classic look to it,” said Patrick Crawford, UL’s assistant director of athletics for communications and digital strategy.

“The new resurfaced court,” Crawford added, “emphasizes the Ragin’ Cajuns brand, which we were most excited about.”

At the time the old floor was introduced, Cajun players responded favorably.

“Oh, man. I love it,” then-UL big man Bryce Washington said at the time.

Public response, however, was somewhat mixed.

CajunDdome workers began installation of the new-look court in recent days.

The floor itself is not new, but the design of it is.

“Most basketball courts have a handful of resurfacings in their lifespan,” UL spokesman Crawford said. “This was a latest resurfacing — a re-gloss.”

Spectators will get their initial first-hand look at the floor on Oct. 28, when UL’s women’s team plays an exhibition game against Mississippi College.

UL’s men’s team open its regular season Nov. 4 against Loyola of New Orleans.
