Baseball:Frank’™s Walk-Off Home Run Sends Louisiana Past Tulane, 7-6

Colton Frank

The homer was Frank’s first hit as a collegiate player

LAFAYETTE – Freshman Colton Frank’s first collegiate hit could not have come at a better time, blasting a solo shot over the left-field wall to send Louisiana to a thrilling 7-6, walk-off victory over Tulane on Tuesday night.

The walk-off homer was the second of the season for the Ragin’ Cajuns (12-14, 3-3), the first coming off the bat of Orynn Veillon in a 6-5, extra-innings affair against Southern Miss on March 13.

Entering the game in the top of the eighth inning, Frank not only notched his first career hit and RBI, but was responsible for two putouts in left field, including hauling in the final out in the top of the ninth inning.

Despite being outhit, 15-8, junior Todd Lott continued to produce for Louisiana, going 2-for-5 on Tuesday night with two RBI and quietly extending his hitting streak to nine games. Freshman Nathan Camp posted the first multi-hit game of his career, a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI.

Newly crowned Sun Belt Player of the Week Hayden Cantrelle got the hit he needed to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, while Tremaine Spears and Handsome Monica each tallied a single of their own.

Michael Leaumont (1-3) recorded his first win of the season, coming up big in relief by allowing just four hits and striking out two batters in 3.1 innings of work.

Louisiana jumped ahead in the first inning and backed it up with four outstanding innings pitched from Jack Burk and three insurance runs in the fourth via a Lott two-run single and a run scored on a double play to go ahead, 4-0.

The lead quickly vanished in the top of the fifth frame when Tulane (17-8, 0-0) put a six spot on the board on six hits to take a 6-4 at the midway point of the ballgame.

Runs in both the sixth and seventh innings leveled things up at 6-6 heading into the ninth, setting up Frank’s dramatic home run which he blasted over the left-field wall on the first pitch of his at bat to seal the 7-6, walk-off win.

The Ragin’ Cajuns return to action this weekend, March 29-31, when they resume conference play at Troy. Game times are set for 6 p.m., on Friday, 3 p.m., on Saturday and 1 p.m., on Sunday.
