2013 Capital One Academic All-District Baseball Teams (PDF)

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana redshirt sophomore third baseman Tyler Girouard has been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District VI baseball first team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday.

The all-district awards are given annually to recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

District VI encompasses the states of Louisiana, Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

First team Academic All-District honorees will advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

With his selection to the District VI first team, Girouard earned a spot on the national ballot for Academic All-American honors.

This is the first Capital One Academic All-District VI award for the Lafayette native and Teurlings Catholic product.

It’s the fourth straight season a Ragin’ Cajuns baseball student-athlete earns Capital One Academic All-District VI honors. Alex Fuselier received second team recognition in 2010 and was a first-team honoree in 2011 and Girouard’s current teammate Ryan Leonards was a first-team selection in 2012.

Girouard, the Cajuns leader in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage, carries a 3.52 cumulative GPA majoring in sports management.

A 2010-11 Sun Belt Honor Roll (3.0.3-49 GPA) and 2011-12 Sun Belt Commissioner’s List (3.5-4.0 GPA) honoree, Girouard currently ranks Top 50 nationally in average (.385) and on-base percentage (.479) while his .680 slugging percentage ranks 12th amongst all Division I players.

Earlier this season he recorded a team-best, 14-game hitting streak and had a streak of 22 consecutive games reached base from Feb. 22-April 5. His batting average, which has been above .300 throughout the season, hovered above .400 for 17 straight games from March 15-April 13.

His 33 RBI leads the Cajuns and is a personal single-season best. He is second on the squad in multi-hit games (14) and needs 17 hits to reach 100 career base hits.

To be eligible for academic all-district teams, student-athletes must be starters or important reserves with at least 3.30 cumulative grade point averages. Candidates also must complete at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and be at least sophomores athletically.

The Ragin’ Cajuns begin a six-game homestand Friday, May 3 hosting Arkansas State at 6 p.m. The ASU series marks the first of back-to-back weekends at “The Tigue” that comprises the season’s final homestand. The Cajuns will wrap up the homestand Friday-Sunday, May 10-12 vs. South Alabama.
