Baseball: Tyler Frederick Delivers Walk-off Double in 10th Inning For 4-3 Win in Game 3
www.ragincajuns.com – Tyler Frederick delivered a walk-off double off the right field wall in the 10th inning to provide Louisiana with a 4-3, series-clinching win over Western Kentucky Sunday afternoon at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
The double scored Matt Goulas who led off the bottom of the 10th with a single to left field.
Taylor Hubbell, who took the mound in the eighth inning after the Cajuns erased a 3-0 deficit with three runs, tossed three innings of one-hit relief and picked up the victory.
Louisiana (34-17, 18-9 Sun Belt) remains in sole possession of second place in the Sun Belt Conference and enters the final week of the season only one game behind Florida Atlantic for the regular season championship.
The Ragin’ Cajuns posted a series victory for the sixth consecutive weekend and won a series from the Hilltoppers (33-20, 14-13 Sun Belt) for the 12th time in 17 all-time weekend sets.
Sunday’s game was Louisiana’s 2010 home finale. The Cajuns finished the season with a 23-10 mark at “The Tigue”.
UL wraps up the regular season with trips to Lake Charles and Monroe next week. The Cajuns visit McNeese State on Tuesday, May 18 and travel north to face La.-Monroe Thursday-Saturday, May 20-22.
Prior to extra innings, the scoring for both teams came in one inning – the Hilltoppers scoring three in the third inning off of UL starter Joey Satriano and the Cajuns posting three in the seventh all charged to reliever Taylor Haydel.
Both Satriano and WKU starter Tanner Perkins cruised through the lineups in the first two innings with only one hit allowed combined.
A leadoff walk issued to Kory Petri was followed by a Jake Wells double to begin the WKU third inning. Two batters later Matt Payton ripped a double down the right field line for the first two runs of the game. The Hilltoppers added a third run on a throwing error by Chad Keefer on a stolen base attempt by Payton.
Thad Griffen relieved Satriano in the fifth inning and turned in another scoreless outing which bought time for the Cajuns bats to come around in the seventh inning.
UL began the bottom of the seventh with three consecutive hits capped off by a Justin Robichaux RBI single to center that scored the home team’s first run of the day.
Greg Fontenot greeted reliever Rye Davis with a bouncing single through the left side to score Alex Fuselier and trim the WKU lead to 3-2. After Kyle Olasin drew a four-pitch walk from Davis to load the bases, Jordan Poirrier hit a grounder to the back of the infield at second base to allow Robichaux to score and tie the game at 3-all.
Hubbell and WKU’s Phil Wetherell posted zeros until Frederick’s double in the 10th inning brought home the winning run for Louisiana.
