Baseball: Three Cajuns Selected In The 2016 MLB Draft
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns baseball program saw three of its players selected in the 2016 MLB Draft on Saturday. Junior right-hander Reagan Bazar was the first Louisiana player selected as he was taken in the 17th round (pick 515) by the San Francisco Giants. The Ragin’ Cajuns then saw seniors Stefan Trosclair and Eric Carter taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the draft. Trosclair was selected 616th overall in the 20th round, while Carter was taken with pick No. 796 in the 26th round by the Cards. "These guys grew up since playing tee ball with the dream of one day being drafted," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "It took a lot of hard work and effort to get to this point. I’m sure it’s a great feeling for them to see their name come up in the draft. I’m proud of all of them for putting in the work and effort to get to this point. There are only 1,100 players taken every year, so this is a huge honor for them to be among that group. "This is good for our program to see a group of guys come in and develop and then get drafted. We want our players to play through us and not just to us. Our coaches, Anthony Babineaux, Jeremy Talbot put in a lot of work to bring in a good group of players every year and then continue to work with them to prepare them for professional ball while they are with us. Daniel Freeman also does a good job of preparing our pitchers for the professional level with the experience that he brings having played at that level himself, and coach Domingue does a great job of keeping the guys eligible till it is time for them to move on." The three selections marks the ninth time in program history that the Ragin’ Cajuns have had at least three players drafted in the same year since Robichaux took over the helm in 1995. The Cajuns also had two signees taken in the draft as outfielder Todd Lott from Trinity Christian Academy was taken in the 20th round (pick 588) by the Cincinnati Reds, and catcher Handsome Monica from Northwest Florida State was selected in the 33rd round (pick 979) by the Atlanta Braves.
