Baseball: Sun Belt and LSWA Bestow Austin Robichaux Pitcher of the Week HonorsLAFAYETTE – A complete game a second straight start and the most strikeouts recorded by a Cajuns baseball pitcher since 2006 landed Louisiana’s Austin Robichaux pitcher of the week honors from the Sun Belt Conference and Louisiana Sportswriters Association on Monday.
The youngest son of head coach Tony Robichaux made his Friday night debut at UALR and handcuffed the Trojans holding them to two hits and posting career-high 14 strikeouts on the way to a 9-2 triumph.
Robichaux did not yield an earned run and strung together a string of 16 consecutive batters retired after the Trojans cut the Cajuns lead to 2-1 with an unearned run in the second inning. His teammates responded with seven unanswered runs to put the game out of reach.
He retired UALR’s leadoff batter in each of the game’s first seven innings, retired the side in order six times and recorded a strikeout in eight of the nine innings including five frames of multiple strikeouts.
“He responded for us on Friday night,” head coach Tony Robichaux said. “We matched him up against (UALR pitcher) Chance Cleveland because of his ERA and he went out and threw the game of his life.
“His performance took a lot of pressure off of our hitters and the bullpen and he was able to do the things you normally want out of a Friday night starter,” Robichaux added. “Getting a complete game is not the easiest thing to do, but he was able to do that and keep them (UALR) out of our bullpen.”
Robichaux’s strikeouts tally was the most by a Cajuns pitcher since Buddy Glass fanned 14 against Nicholls State in May 2006.
He held the opposition to five hits or less for the sixth time in nine starts and lowered his season ERA to 2.45 and opposing team’s batting average to .218.
The performance came on the heels of holding Troy’s .300-plus hitting lineup to five hits during his first career nine inning complete game back on April 6.
It’s the first weekly honor for a Ragin’ Cajuns player in 2013. For Robichaux, he picked up his second career SBC accolade adding to the award picked up last season after a complete game seven inning shutout at Middle Tennessee on May 12, 2012.
Louisiana closes out a five-game road trip traveling to Thibodaux to face Nicholls State at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16 then venturing northward to Natchitoches to complete a suspended game with Northwestern State at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17. The Cajuns are back at “The Tigue” in Sun Belt action this weekend hosting Florida Atlantic Friday-Sunday, April 19-21.
