Baseball: Schmidt Tabbed To Collegiate Baseball All-America TeamsJeff Schneider, Associate Director of Athletics Communications LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana senior left-hander Colten Schmidt became the 26th player in program history to earn All-America honors as he was named to the 2018 Collegiate Baseball All-America Second Team, the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper announced on Thursday.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Colten," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "It’s always an honor when you have someone receive a national award because it gives both your program and the university recognition. Colten was a guy who had to work while he waited last year, and it paid off for him this season. This is another great example of baseball paying someone back for their hard work and effort."
Schmidt is the first player to be named to the Collegiate Baseball All-America first or second team since 2014 when Jace Conrad was selected to the first team as a second baseman.
The Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year, Schmidt ranks fourth in the nation in walks allowed per nine innings (0.76) and sixth in strikeout to walk ratio (10.00). In 106.1 innings, Schmidt notched a 7-0 record with a league-best 2.45 ERA and 90 strikeouts.
Schmidt held opponents to a .214 average and combined to toss two shutouts on the year and one complete game. The La Porte, Texas native registered a quality start in 10 of his 15 starts during the season.
