Baseball: Robichaux Earns Third Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week Award – UL SBC POW since 1992 included

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Junior pitcher Austin Robichaux earned his third career Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week Award after throwing a complete game shutout against No. 21 Alabama this past Friday, the conference office announced on Monday.

“This award is good for both Austin and our team,” head coach Tony Robichaux said. “It gives our program and university some notability. It’s a reward that praises a player for a good individual performance. I know Austin would tell you that he couldn’t have done it without his catcher that night or the defense behind him.”

Robichaux was stellar in the opening game of the Alabama series for the Cajuns (10-2) posting his second career complete game shutout against the 21st ranked Crimson Tide. Robichaux worked out of a first inning bases loaded jam and then settled in to strike out 11 hitters. The Crowley, La., native lowered his ERA almost a full point after the game picking up his second win of the season in a 2-0 game. Robichaux scattered seven hits in the outing and only walked one.

“This is a great reward in that it promotes a guy that worked hard to earn it.” Robichaux mentioned. “Austin put in the hard work in the fall to be able to have an outing like he did last week. So its good to be rewarded for your hard work, because when you work hard baseball will pay you back.”

Robichaux joins teammate Carson Baranik on the list of players that have won the award this season, and is the fourth Ragin’ Cajuns player to win the award three or more times in his career.

“The big thing we try to impress upon our pitchers is consistency,” Robichaux added. “We want our guys to know what we are going to get when they take the mound. That gives our team confidence and it makes players great.”

Louisiana returns to action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. when they host in-state foe Southeastern Louisiana at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field in the fourth game of a seven-game home stand.
