Baseball: Osborne Receives All-American Honor
Zach Osborne’s efforts on the mound as Louisiana’s ace for the 2010 season have netted him another postseason honor. On Monday, the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Sporting Goods named him to their Division I All-America team. Osborne, who crafted 14 quality starts with a 9-4 overall record and 2.37 ERA, was a third team selection. Osborne becomes the first Ragin’ Cajun to be named an All-American since the ABCA/Rawlings bestowed honors upon Jonathan Lucroy and Scott Hawkins in 2007. He’s the first Cajuns pitcher since Hunter Moody in 2006 to be named to an All-America team. The Ragin’ Cajuns baseball program has now produced 15 All-American selections under the direction of head coach Tony Robichaux. Monday’s honor adds to a growing list for Osborne. He was previously named to the All-Sun Belt First Team, NCAA Austin Regional All-Tournament Team, ABCA/Rawlings All-South Central Region First Team and All-Louisiana First Team and Louisiana Pitcher of the Year. Osborne went the entire season with an ERA below 3.00 – highest mark was 2.65 – and held opponents to a .222 batting average. In the latest NCAA rankings, the Houston native ranks Top 25 nationally in ERA and Top 50 in strikeouts, victories, hits allowed and walks allowed per nine innings. Osborne posted 112 strikeouts over 121 2/3 innings pitched – the first 100-strikeout season by a UL hurler since Danny Farquhar in 2007. Osborne finished his two-year stay at UL with a 14-7 career record and 2.81 career ERA. In 205 1/3 innings pitched in a Cajuns uniform he held opponents to 185 hits, 64 earned runs, posted 179 strikeouts and only issued 35 walks. He was drafted in the ninth round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Texas Rangers and is currently a starting pitcher for the Spokane Indians of the short-season Class A Northwest League. The ABCA All-America teams are collegiate baseball’s oldest selections, dating to 1949. All Division I coaches have the opportunity to nominate and vote on these selections, which are initially compiled into eight All-Region teams. These teams are then finalized as the first, second and third All-America teams by the ABCA’s NCAA Division I All-America and Coach of the Year Committee, chaired by Dean Ehehalt of Monmouth University (N.J.). This year, the committee selected 64 players as 2010 ABCA All-Americans. All-American selections under Tony Robichaux — Ragin’ Cajuns — ![]()
