LAFAYETTE-With the 101st pick of the 2007 Major League Baseball First Year
Players’ Draft, the Milwaukee Brewers selected Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns
catcher Jonathan Lucroy. With the selection, Lucroy becomes the second
highest drafted player in the Tony Robichaux Era.
Including Lucroy, a dozen players have been drafted in the top 10 rounds of
the MLB Draft under Robichaux. Darrin Babineaux was the highest pick under
Robichaux when he was taken in the second round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in
1995.
Lucroy ends his Cajuns career as one of the most accomplished players in
school history. In just three season, Lucroy ranks in the Cajuns’ top-5 in
eight career categories.
He is fourth on the UL career batting average list with a .356 average.
Lucroy ranks second all-time with 241 base hits, including being first in
career doubles with 54 and third in career homeruns with 35. He is first in
school history with 414 total bases and third all-time with a .612 career
slugging percentage. Lucroy is the Cajuns’ career RBI leader with 184 and
fourth all-time with 16 career sacrifice flies.
Lucroy was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in his rookie campaign
in 2005. He was a two-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection (2005, 2007).
Lucroy was named to the 2006 Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team. Lucroy
excelled in the classroom as well as he was also a member of the Sun Belt
Conference Academic Honor Roll.
In 2007, Lucroy was named First Team All-Sun Belt Conference. He joined
Jefferies Tatford as one of just two players to start all 62 of the Cajuns
games and proceeded to lead the team with a .360 batting average.
He recorded 95 hits on the season, the second highest single season total in
Cajuns history, behind only Nathan Nelson – a 10th round draft pick by the
Houston Astros in 2000.
Of his 95 hits, he had 40 extra base hits, including 18 homeruns, 19 doubles
and three triples. His 18 homeruns were the third most in school history for
a season, behind only David King (1989) and David Alvis (1985) who both had
19 homers in a single season.
For the second consecutive year, he drove in 68 runs to lead the team.
Lucroy set the Ragin’ Cajuns’ single season record with a 174 total bases on
the year. He had 31 multiple hit games on the season; including a five-hit
performance against South Alabama on March 11. He tied for first on the team
with 13 multi-RBI games and had five or more RBI in four games, the most by
any Cajuns player in 2007.
