Baseball: Lucroy Called Up to the Majors
Jonathan Lucroy, a catcher who earned All-American status while playing at Louisiana from 2005-07, has been called up to the Major Leagues and will join the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday in Minneapolis for an interleague series with the Minnesota Twins. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Lucroy is coming up from Class AAA Nashville to replace Gregg Zaun – who is going on the 15-day DL – on the Brewers’ 40-man roster. The 23-year-old Lucroy, considered Milwaukee’s top catching prospect, was batting .311 with two homers and 16 RBIs in 31 games for the Brewers’ Double-A and Triple-A affiliates this season. Lucroy was selected by the Brewers with the 101st pick of the 2007 Major League Baseball First Year Players’ Draft. He has made his ascension to the majors in three-plus seasons. He spent the 2007 season with Milwaukee’s rookie level squad Helena Brewers. In 2008, Lucroy joined the Class A ranks and split time between the West Virigina Power and Brevard County Manatees. In 2009, he was called up to Class AA Huntsville where he played 125 games and logged 112 base hits while hitting .267. He began the 2010 season in Hunstville before being promoted to Class AAA Nashville of the Pacific Coast League on April 20. In just three seasons with the Ragin’ Cajuns, Lucroy ranked in the Top 5 in eight career categories. He was a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in his rookie campaign in 2005 and a two-time All-Sun Belt Conference selection (2005, 2007). In 2007 he was named to the Baseball America All-America Team, was an ABCA All-American and All-South Central Region selection, earned First Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors and was the Louisiana Hitter of the Year. Lucroy ended his UL career fourth on the batting average list with a .356 clip and second all-time with 241 base hits. He also finished first in career doubles (54) and third in career homeruns (35). He still ranks as the Cajuns’ career RBI leader (184) and total bases (414). Lucroy is the first Ragin’ Cajun who was a true position player coached by Tony Robichaux to reach the majors. — Ragin’ Cajuns —
