MONROE, La. – Trailing 8-6 heading into the ninth inning, Louisiana Baseball put together a monster rally, scoring seven runs across the ninth and tenth frames to steal the second game of the series from ULM, 13-9, on Friday night. Needing a bit of ninth-inning magic, Hunter Kasuls and Orynn Veillon delivered pivotal solo home runs to force extra innings. When the 10th rolled around, the Ragin’ Cajuns lit up the scoreboard with five runs to clinch the victory. For the second-straight evening, the long ball proved to be effective as Louisiana hit four on the night, bringing its weekend total up to seven. It was the third time that Louisiana has had at least four homers in a contest this year and the first since it recorded four against Arkansas State on April 6. The Ragin’ Cajuns are 3-0 in those games. Brennan Breaux was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Kole McKinnon produced a season-high three hits, one of which was a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Kasuls, Veillon and Handsome Monica each recorded two hits, with each responsible for a solo home run. Monica’s homer was number 14 on the season, moving him into a tie for third in total home runs in the Sun Belt with South Alabama’s Wells Davis, while Veillon’s two hits saw him extend his hitting streak to 19 games. Five different Ragin’ Cajuns saw time on the mound on Friday, but it was Michael Leaumont (2-3) who earned the victory after throwing 2.0 innings of one-hit, one-run ball with three strikeouts. ULM jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run shot from Trent Tingelstad. The momentum quickly changed in the top of the next frame when Louisiana took its first lead of the evening on a passed ball, a Breaux single and a Connor Dupuy fielder’s choice. The long ball came into effect for the Ragin’ Cajuns in the top of the fourth inning when Monica launched his 14th homer of the year over the left field wall. McKinnon followed suit two batters later, sending a two-run blast over the same wall to extend the lead to 6-2. The lead was evaporated in the bottom of the fifth when ULM scored four runs on five hits, all with two outs in the inning, to tie the game up at six runs apiece. The Warhawks took an 8-6 lead two innings later, priming the hosts for a series victory. Down to its final outs in the game and needing two runs, Kasuls and Veillon each delivered in a big way when the duo sent solo shots hurdling out of the ballpark to tie things up at 8-8 and force extra innings. From there, it was all Louisiana as the Ragin’ Cajuns plated five runs courtesy of a Dupuy double, a bases-loaded walk and a bases-clearing triple off the bat of Veillon to take a commanding 13-8 lead. ULM added a home run late, but it was too late as Louisiana secured the 13-9 triumph.
