Baseball: Louisiana Completes Sweep Of Jaguars In Run Rule Game

MOBILE, La. – The third-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team run-ruled South Alabama 13-3 in seven innings on Sunday to complete the team’s first ever sweep of the Jaguars at Stanky Field in program history.

 

 

 

With the win, the Cajuns improve to 46-7 on the year and 23-4 in conference play. The 46 wins are the most regular-season wins against division I opponents in school history. Louisiana also closes out the regular season with the nation’s best road record at 22-2.

 

 

 

The Ragin’ Cajuns pounded out 16 hits in the contest led by Caleb Adams who was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, RBI and scored twice. Greg Davis continued his strong weekend going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI while scoring twice. Davis finished the series 6-for-8 with a grand slam, eight RBI and scored four runs.

 

 

 

“The hitters did a great job of coming back today and getting after it,” head coach Tony Robichaux said. “The guys really took advantage of the wind. We never stopped competing and this is special to get a sweep at South Alabama.”

 

 

 

Cody Boutte improved to 7-0 on the season after limiting South Alabama (21-29, 10-16 Sun Belt) to three runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts in six innings.

 

 

 

Junior Seth Harrison came on in the seventh and threw a scoreless inning with a two strikeouts to close out the contest.

 

 

 

Hunter Soleymani was handed his third loss of the year in the game. Soleymani gave up six runs on eight hits with a strikeout.

 

 

 

The Cajuns jumped out to an early lead for the third straight game scoring three runs in the top of the second. Chase Compton brought home the first run of the inning on a ground ball to second scoring Jace Conrad from third. In the next at bat, Davis singled to left to score Adams. Michael Strentz drove in the final run of the inning for Louisiana singling in Davis from second with two outs.

 

 

 

South Alabama answered with two runs in the bottom half of the second on RBI singles by Drew LaBounty and Davis Knapp.

 

 

 

Louisiana scored three runs for the second consecutive inning in the top of the third to take a 6-2 lead. Compton picked up his second RBI of the game singling in Tyler Girouard from third with two outs. Davis drove in the other two runs of the inning on a single through the left side of the infield.

 

 

 

Knapp added another run for USA in the bottom of the fourth on single to center to cut the advantage to 6-3.

 

 

 

The Ragin’ Cajuns broke the game open in the top of the sixth scoring five runs on four hits and two South Alabama errors. An Adams RBI double highlighted the scoring in the inning and gave the Cajuns an 11-3 lead.

 

 

 

Dylan Butler and Girouard tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to complete the run rule. Butler sent the first pitch he saw in the inning over the fence in straight away center for a solo home run. Later in the inning, Girouard singled to left to score Blake Trahan.

 

 

 

The Cajuns return home next weekend to close out the regular season against ULM in a three-game conference series. The first game is slated for Thursday at 6 p.m., while game two is Friday at 6 p.m. and game three is Saturday at 3 p.m.
