Baseball: Leger Garners Back-To-Back Sun Belt Pitcher Of The Week Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. – After not being selected once in his first two seasons with the Louisiana baseball team, junior left-hander Gunner Leger has garnered back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week honors following his dominant performance against Saint Peter’s, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Collegiate Baseball Newspaper also honored Leger as he was tabbed one of ten National Players of the Week. Leger joins Evan Guillory (2016) and Kyle Clement (2015) on the list of Ragin’ Cajuns players to earn the recognition in the last three seasons.

"Anytime you earn national recognition, it’s good for both your program and the University," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "I’m glad for Gunner to be honored both by our conference and nationally. This is a perfect example of baseball paying someone back for their hard work and effort. We know every time that we send him out on Fridays that he is going to compete and give us a chance to win. I can’t be prouder of the effort that he’s given us this season."

Leger came one batter away from posting a no-hitter against Saint Peter’s in the Cajuns 10-0 victory Friday night. The Lake Charles, La., native faced one over the minimum in the contest taking a perfect game into the eighth inning. With two outs in the ninth, pinch hitter Brian Turton blooped a single to centerfield to pick up the only hit of the night for the Peacocks.

The junior lefty struck out a season-best nine batters in the contest while not allowing a free pass. Leger has combined to post two shutouts on the year with a 3-1 record and has dropped his ERA to one of the best in the league at 1.09 through 24.2 innings.

Louisiana returns to action Wednesday night at 6 p.m. as the squad heads to in-state rival Louisiana Tech for a midweek contest at J.C. Love Field. Fans can listen to the contest live on ESPN 1420-AM with Jay Walker and Jeff Schneider making the call.
