Baseball: Kendall Mayer Receives Sun Belt Conference Male Postgraduate Scholarship Award

DESTIN, Fla. – The Sun Belt Conference honored the academic and athletic achievements of its schools and student-athletes on Tuesday night during the conference’s annual spring meetings in Destin, Florida, and Ragin’ Cajuns baseball’s Kendall Mayer was named the winner of the Male Postgraduate Scholarship Award.

The Post-Graduate Scholar Athlete of the Year Award is given in recognition of superior academic achievement. The winners receive a check for $4,500 for use toward their future education.

At the conclusion of the fall semester in 2011, Mayer and his brother went with a small group from his church to Nairobi, Kenya, for a 30-day mission. While the majority of his teammates were taking a break from the rigors of the fall semester and practice, he was giving himself to help others in need.

As the Community Liaison for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Kendall has helped to spearhead multiple fundraisers for Samaritan’s feet, a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide children with shoes.

“He is the rare student-athlete who has an understanding of life and is willing to give more than he receives,” Louisiana Director of Athletics Scott Farmer said.

Mayer aspires to one day be an administrator for an athletic department. In order to prepare himself for this path, he as furthered his administrative experiences by serving as a facilities coordinator for high school teams utilizing M.L. ‘Tigue’ Moore Field.

A three time President’s List honoree for the Cajuns, Mayer is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and even with his commitments to being a student-athlete and volunteer work, he has maintained a 3.57 GPA.

Mayer is set to graduate this summer and has already been accepted to the University of Oklahoma – Adult & Higher Education Master’s Degree Program.

The Sandy, Utah, native began his journey as a collegiate student-athlete on the roster of Pac-12 Conference member Washington State as a freshman in 2010. He spent the 2011 season at Seminole State College in Oklahoma as a sophomore. He arrived on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus in fall 2011.

He made 10 appearances, including two starts, for the Cajuns in the 2012 season. This year he began the season with five innings of hitless, shutout baseball and has recorded 26 strikeouts in just 15 innings. The senior righty has allowed just five hits and held the opposition to a .098 average.

Mayer and his Ragin’ Cajuns teammates begin play in the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Championship at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field on Wednesday, May 22 against FIU at 7:30 p.m.
