Baseball: Glass’ Complete Game Leads Cajuns to Victory
Chris Whitehead, Sports Information –
Cajuns win their 10th game of the season behind Glass’ complete game.
LAFAYETTE-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns baseball’s Buddy Glass threw the first
complete game of his career leading UL to a 3-1 win over Minnesota at M.L.
“Tigue” Moore Field on Sunday morning.
Glass (3-0) went the full nine innings for the first time in his career and
led the Cajuns (10-7) to victory. The sophomore allowed just one run,
scattering seven hits on the day, allowing just one extra base hit. Glass
threw 114 pitches, including 73 strikes. He walked a pair and struck out
three Gophers batters.
The complete game marks the third time in the 2006 season that the Cajuns
have allowed a pitcher to go the distance. Three complete games during the
season ties the number of complete games UL had in all of 2005 (66 games).
The Ragin’ Cajuns are 3-0 on the season when the starting hurler pitches a
complete game.
Hunter Moody was the first of the Cajuns pitchers to toss a complete game.
He worked nine innings against No. 15 Texas A&M leading UL to a 7-1 victory
on March 11. The very next day, Jason Fernandez pitched a complete game to
lead Louisiana to a 3-2 victory over Iowa.
For the second day in a row, Minnesota led off the game with a base hit.
Taylor VanderAarde doubled to right centerfield. He would advance to third
on a ground ball and came around to score as Dan Lyons singled down the
leftfield line.
The Cajuns escaped the inning without any more damage as Andy Hunter lined
out to Devon Bourque who quickly threw to first to complete the double play.
The Cajuns could not muster any offense in the early goings. In the third
inning, Devon Bourque hit a one-out single through the right side to give
the Ragin’ Cajuns their first hit of the game. Bourque stole second, but
would be left stranded as John McCarthy struckout to end the inning.
The strikeout for McCarthy was only the second strikeout for the
rightfielder in 2006. McCarthy had not struck out in 67 at bats and 80
plate appearances. His last strikeout occurred in his first at bat of the
season against Louisiana-Monroe on Feb. 14.
UL scratched the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jameson
Parker led off the inning with a single to left center and advanced to
second on a Jonathan Lucroy single. Tim Santiago plated Parker with an RBI
single to leftfield to tie the game at 1-1.
Blaine LaFleur extended the inning reaching base on a fielder’s choice.
Jefferies Tatford singled to second base advancing LaFleur to second and
Santiago to third. Landry reached on a fielder’s choice that plated Santiago
to give the Cajuns a 2-1 advantage.
The Cajuns would extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
McCarthy doubled down the rightfield line. Parker singled up the middle to
score McCarthy and increase the Ragin’ Cajuns lead to 3-1.
The lead held up as Glass’ pitching kept the Golden Gopher batters at bay.
Offensively for the Cajuns, UL had 10 hits as a team. Lucroy and McCarthy
collected the only extra base hits of the day for the Ragin’ Cajuns, both
doubling in the contest.
Lucroy was also one of two Cajuns batters to have multiple hits in the game.
Parker and Lucroy both had a pair of hits to lead UL.
Parker, Santiago and Josh Landry were responsible for the Cajuns three runs.
The trio all one run batted in on the day. Parker, Santiago and McCarthy
each scored one of the Cajuns’ runs on the day.
The Ragin’ Cajuns will return to action on Tuesday, March 21 as they head to
Beaumont, Texas to take on Lamar in a midweek contest. First pitch is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
