Baseball & Football: Ragin’ Cajuns Adding Baseball’s Jam Williams As Dual-Sport Athlete
Ragin’ Cajuns outfielder to have two years of eligibility remaining for football
LAFAYETTE – Following in the recent footsteps of former dual-sport athletes Elijah McGuire and Jeryl Brazil, Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns baseball player Jam Williams officially joined the Ragin’ Cajuns football team on Monday, in a joint announcement by head football coach Mark Hudspeth and head baseball coach Tony Robichaux.
Williams, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound outfielder for the Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team, will have two years of eligibility remaining in football. Williams becomes the fifth dual-sport athlete for the Ragin’ Cajuns in the past four years joining McGuire (football/basketball), Brazil (track and field/football), Christian Umphries (track and field/football) and Angus Sinclair (track and field/football).
"We are excited about Jam joining the football team. We had recruited Jam out of high school and had always thought he was an extraordinary athlete," Hudspeth said. "It’s great that our coaching staff at UL works so well together. We all want to do whatever it takes to help our university be successful."
Williams, who will be a senior for the Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team in 2018, has played in 71 games in his career for Louisiana. The Farmerville, La., native went 3-for-15 (.200) at the plate for the Ragin’ Cajuns in 2017 with seven runs scored and three stolen bases.
"Jam is a special athlete and we are glad to be able to get together with Coach Hudspeth and have him fulfill a dream of being a dual-sport athlete at the collegiate level," Robichaux said. "Jam played both sports at a high level in high school and both Coach Hudspeth and I support him in this effort."
Louisiana will officially report for fall camp on July 30 and will open the 2017 season on Sept. 2 against Southeastern Louisiana at Cajun Field.
