Baseball: Fernandez Named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week

This is the first such honor for the pitcher in 2006.

NEW ORLEANS-The Sun Belt Conference announced Monday morning that Louisiana’s
Jason Fernandez was named SBC Pitcher of the Week.

The accolade is the first conference award that Fernandez has earned and the
third this season for the Cajuns. Hunter Moody has been named Pitcher of the
Week twice in 2006.

Fernandez made two appearances on the week earning a win against Southeastern
Louisiana. He registered a 0.71 ERA, pitching 12.1 innings allowing just one
run. Fernandez fanned 21 batters in his two appearances while allowing just
one free pass.

On Tuesday, Fernandez recorded nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings against SLU.
Against the Lions, the Baton Rouge native allowed no runs scattering four
hits and allowing only one player past third base.

He returned to the mound on Sunday and led the Cajuns to a sweep of Arkansas
State. Against the Indians, the hurler fanned a career high 12 batters in
6.1 innings of work.

Fernandez is currently 3-1 on the season with a 1.85 ERA. Opposing batters
are batting just .188 against him. He leads the team with 39 strikeouts in
39.0 innings pitched.
