Baseball: Compton Lifts Cajuns to Extra Innings Win

Box Score

Chase Compton provided extra inning dramatics for the Cajuns as his bases-loaded bunt single in the 11th inning lifted the Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team to a 6-5 win over Towson in the home opener Friday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

Sophomore Matt Hicks picked up the win for the Cajuns (2-3) after throwing 4.0 scoreless innings in relief with no walks and four strikeouts.

Starter Joe Zimmerman was chased in the third inning after giving up four runs on three hits in 2.2 innings.

UL outhit Towson 13-10 in the contest with both Compton and Ryan Leonards posting three hits to lead the way.

In the bottom of the first, the Cajuns threatened after putting runners on second on third with no outs. TU starter Michael Trionfo fanned the next two batters and looked to be out of the jam, but Dylan Butler came through for the Cajuns driving a single into right to score Leonards and Tyler Girouard.

Towson cut the Louisiana lead to 2-1 in the top of the third on a bases loaded sacrifice fly to left by Dominic Frantantuono. After an Andrew Parker walk reloaded the bases, Brendan Butler singled through the left side scoring two runs to give the Tigers a 3-2 edge. Zach Fisher capped the scoring for Towson in the third with an RBI double down the right field line.

The Cajuns looked to even the game in the bottom of the fourth as Chris Sinclair singled through the right side of the infield with runners on first and second, but a good throw by Towson right fielder Frantantuono cut down Chase Compton at the plate to end the inning and keep the score 4-2.

In the top of the fifth, the Tigers increased their lead to 5-2 on a Cajuns error, but UL would get the run back in the bottom half of the inning after a RBI double by Leonards to make the score 5-3.

UL evened the contest in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Michael Strentz and a two-out bases loaded walk by Daniel Nichols.

After three scoreless innings, Leonards drove a triple to the gap in right center with one out. After two intentional walks by reliver Austin Tyler, Compton skillfully placed a bunt where no play could be made at the plate as Leonards came in to score the winning run.

The Cajuns return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. as they host Towson in the second game of the series at “Tigue” Moore Field.
