Baseball: Cajuns Headed Out to Join Summer League Squads

LAFAYETTE – A total of 13 members of the Ragin’ Cajuns baseball squad recently departed for wooden-bat collegiate summer league competition with the 2013 season having concluded following last weekend’s NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.

Louisiana’s contingent will play in seven different leagues this summer, ranging from the New England Collegiate Baseball League in New York to the Alaska Baseball League.

Fans will have the opportunity to catch a pair of Cajuns in action as Brenn Conrad and Nick Zaunbrecher are participating for Lafayette’s own Acadiana Cane Cutters in the Texas Collegiate League. The Cane Cutters play their home contests at Fabacher Field located on La Neuville Road in nearby Youngsville.

Chase Compton and Ryan Leonards are returning to the Anchorage Bucs of the Alaska Baseball League. Compton was named the 2012 ABL Player of the Year and was first team all-league selection. Leonards was a second-team pick in the ABL playing third base.

Joining Compton and Leonards in Anchorage this season is catcher Michael Strentz who set personal season bests in average, runs, base hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage and on-base percentage during 2013.

The Anchorage Bucs begin play on Sunday, June 9 with a doubleheader against the cross-town rival Anchorage Glacier Pilots.

Another Cajun making a trip to the far west is rising sophomore Joe Robbins who will suit up for the Kelowna (British Columbia, Canada) Falcons of the West Coast League. The Falcons begin their 2013 summer campaign on Wednesday, June 5 with the opening game of a three-game series with the Victoria Harbourcats.

Another trio of Cajuns taking in summer ball as a group features Nick Thurman, Blake Trahan and Lance Quebodeaux competing for the Clarinda (Iowa) A’s of the M.I.N.K. (Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas) Collegiate Baseball League.

Dylan Butler’s second season in the summer ranks takes place in New York as he is slated to be a member of the 2013 Oneonta (N.Y.) Outlaws of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Last year, Butler worked with the Thomasville HiToms of the Coastal Plains League.

Ryan Wilson, who saw time as a starter and reliever for UL in 2013, is headed to El Dorado, Kan., to join the El Dorard Broncos of the Jayhawk Baseball League. Wilson will join the Broncos season in progress as the squad opened the season back on May 26.

A pair of freshmen, who did not see action in the 2013 season, round out the list of Cajuns participating in summer baseball league action. Alex Stringer (redshirted) and Connor Toups (ineligible) are both members of the Shore Eagles squad in the Myrtle Beach Baseball League.
