Baseball: Cajuns Complete Sweep Of Southern Miss In Nightcap

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After rallying to win the first game of the doubleheader, the 14th ranked Louisiana baseball team cruised to a 9-5 victory in the nightcap to complete the sweep of Southern Miss on Saturday night at Pete Taylor Park.

 

 

 

The win gives the Cajuns (7-1) their third straight series win dating back to 2013 and gives the squad a seven-game win streak.

 

 

 

Eight of nine starters had at least one hit in the contest for the Ragin’ Cajuns led by left fielder Caleb Adams who broke out of his early season slump going a 4-for-5 at the plate with three doubles, a triple and a RBI.

 

 

 

Louisiana outhit Southern Miss (2-5) 12-8 in the contest with eight of the hits coming in the middle three frames.

 

 

 

Starter Cody Boutte earned his first win of 2014 and ninth of his career holding the Golden Eagles scoreless through the first five innings before giving up two runs in the sixth. Boutte finished the day with four strikeouts.

 

 

 

Taylor Nunez was tabbed with the loss for Southern Miss surrendering six runs (three earned) on four hits in 4.2 innings to fall to 0-1 on the year.

 

 

 

Adams came in to score the first run of the game on a USM error after leading off the game with a double down the left field line. Later in the inning, Ryan Leonards brought home shortstop Blake Trahan on a ball hit to second to give the Cajuns a 2-0 edge. Jace Conrad capped the scoring in the inning coming in to score on a wild pitch by Nunez.

 

 

 

The Ragin’ Cajuns added three more runs in the top of the fifth on two-run homer to left by Michael Strentz and a RBI double by Nick Thurman.

 

 

 

Chase Compton made it 7-0 on a RBI single to right scoring Trahan from third in the top of the sixth.

 

 

 

In the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Eagles got on the board with a two-run single by pinch hitter Michael Gilbert to make the score 7-2 Cajuns.

 

 

 

Louisiana regained a seven run advantage in the top half of the seventh on a RBI double by Adams and a sac fly to left by Trahan.

 

 

 

Southern Miss pulled within four runs in the bottom of the seventh scoring three runs on double to center by catcher Matt Durst.

 

 

 

Ben Carter and Greg Milhorn combined to hold the Golden Eagles scoreless in the final two innings to close out the contest.

 

 

 

The Cajuns take their seven-game win streak on the road to Baton Rouge, La. for a mid-week game against third ranked LSU on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Alex Box Stadium.
