LAFAYETTE – A season-opening, four-game series at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field with Nebraska, 26 total home games and meetings with nine teams which qualified for the 2008 NCAA Tournament highlight Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team’s 2009 schedule which was announced Thursday by head coach Tony Robichaux.
The Ragin’ Cajuns will play 21 games against NCAA Tournament teams from last season. Included are midweek matchups with LSU and Rice, participants in the 2008 World Series, and three-game road series at Southern Mississippi and East Carolina.
An even balance between home and away games is set for the first half of the season with Louisiana hosting 15 out of the 28 games. The last four weeks of the season will test the Cajuns as 12 of the final 16 games will be on the road.
Robichaux’s 15th season at UL begins at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field Feb. 20-22 with the four-game series against Nebraska. It’s the Cornhuskers first trip to Lafayette since participating in the 2001 Mardi Gras Ball Classsic.
One week later, the Ragin’ Cajuns travel out of state for the first time for a three-game set at Southern Miss Feb. 27-March 1. UL then returns to Lafayette to host Houston on March 3. The Cajuns return Houston’s visit on March 24.
Sun Belt Conference play gets underway March 6-8 in Jonesboro, Ark., against Arkansas State. The next weekend (March 13-15) the Cajuns’ first home SBC series will be held against Florida Atlantic.
The Cajuns meet LSU in Baton Rouge on March 11 for the first of two meetings with the Tigers. UL and LSU meet again on April 22 at Zephyr Field in New Orleans.
Louisiana also hosts Sun Belt members UALR (March 20-22), Middle Tennessee (April 3-5), South Alabama (April 17-19) and Western Kentucky (May 8-10) at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. Other Sun Belt road series are at Florida International (March 27-29), ULM (April 10-12), Troy (April 24-26) and New Orleans (May 14-16).
For the bye week in SBC play, a trip to meet East Carolina is scheduled for May 1-3 in Greenville, N.C. The two programs meet for the first time since the 2000 NCAA Regional held at M.L.“Tigue” Moore Field.
Louisiana will also play home-and-home series with in-state foes Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana. The Cajuns visit Tulane on April 7.
The 2009 Sun Belt Conference Tournament is set for May 20-23 in Troy, Ala., at Riddle Pace Field on the Troy University campus.
Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns will hold their annual Red-Black Fall World Series at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field beginning with game one on Monday, Nov. 3.
