Tony Robichaux becomes the 33rd active NCAA Division I coach to win 750 career games

LAFAYETTE Brian Bowman’s (Lafayette, La.) bases-loaded RBI single in the 10th inning gave the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the McNeese State Cowboys Wednesday night at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

The win marked Louisiana’s (24-25) second consecutive one-run triumph at home, while making head coach Tony Robichaux the 33rd active NCAA Division I coach to reach 750 career victories.

Despite Louisiana leaving 13 runners stranded on base, McNeese State (13-36) committed five errors – Shon Landry and Keith Patnode were each charged with miscues.

Senior Brent Solich (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.) retired only one batter and later became the beneficiary of the Cajuns’ 10th-inning run to earn the victory (2-4). Luke Wagley (Greenwell Springs, La.) struck out a career-high six batters, while scattering two hits in five innings of relief.

McNeese State nearly handed Louisiana starter Matt Broussard (Breaux Bridge, La.) his first negative decision of the season. However, his teammates picked him up in the ninth to take him off the hook for the decision. Broussard was touched for four runs – two earned – on three hits through 4 2/3 innings.

Justin LeBleu (2-3) was dealt the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings. McNeese State starter Jonathan Conrad gave up two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts through six complete innings.

Three Cajuns combined for six of the team’s eight total hits. Bowman finished 2-for-6 with two RBI, while Scott Hawkins (Collierville, Tenn.) was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Josh Logan (Magee, Miss.) became the 11th player in school history to record two triples in a game, finishing 2-for-4. It was the first two-triple outing for a Cajun since fellow centerfielder John Coker did it on May 14, 2005 against Middle Tennessee.

Back-to-back one-out doubles in the first resulted in a 1-0 Cajuns lead. Matt Goulas (New Iberia, La.) ripped a double off the left field wall – narrowly missing his second home run in as many nights. Hawkins then plated Goulas on a ground-rule RBI double deep in the right field corner for a 1-0 lead.

McNeese State jumped ahead of the Cajuns in the third, 2-1. Kanon Broussard reached on a one-out fielding error by Tyler Benzel (Groveland, Fla.) and later moved to third on Sam Merrill’s single to center. A wild pitch by Matt Broussard allowed the tying run to score.

Two batter’s later, Taylor Freeman’s RBI fielder’s choice plated Merrill for a 2-1 Cowboys lead.

Logan opened the Cajuns’ half of the third with a lead-off triple to left-center. On the ensuing at bat, Logan scored on a fielding error when Landry booted a routine ground ball at shortshop.

Landry later redeemed himself in the fifth on a two-RBI single that skipped past shortstop William Long (Valrico, Fla.) to give the Cowboys a 4-2 lead.

The Cajuns earned one of those two runs back the hard way in the bottom of the fifth. McNeese third baseman Patnode misplayed two ground balls that permitted the inning to continue. Hawkins followed Patnode’s first error with a RBI single to right, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

Louisiana knotted the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth effectively pushing the game to extra innings. Bowman lined a lead-off double down the right field line and eventually scored the tying run on Landry’s second throwing error.

In the 10th inning, Benzel led off with a single up the middle before Matt Hicks (Houston, Texas) was hit by the next pitch to put two runners on base. After a sacrifice bunt and intentionally walking Logan to load the bases, Bowman delivered the game-winning hit to right field.

Louisiana makes its first regular-season trip to Bowling Green, Ky., since 2005 when the Ragin’ Cajuns battle the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Nick Denes Field this weekend. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. Friday.
