www.ragincajuns.com – The 15th Annual Fall World Series lasted only one day for Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team as the Black team swept a doubleheader from the Red team Sunday afternoon at M.L. “Tigue’ Moore Field by scores of 5-3 and 4-2.
As a result of the sweep, the Black team captured the best-of-three series. With the series coming to a close, the Ragin’ Cajuns are now finished with fall practice for the 2009-10 season.
Chad Keefer stole the spotlight at the plate for the Black team. He completed the doubleheader 5-for-8 which included two doubles and a triple.
Leading the Red team offense was Lance Marvel who went 4-for-7 with two RBI. Kyle Bostick and Alex Fuselier each picked up three hits.
Pitcher Randall Bulliard collected a save in both games. The junior from Lafayette tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. He induced two double plays and tallied three strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth in the nightcap.
Justin Robichaux (Black) bested Zach Osborne (Red) in the much anticipated game one matchup. Taylor Hubbell (Black) and T.J. Geith (Red) turned in quality starts in game two.
Joey Satriano was the top reliever as he held the Red team to only one hit over 3 2/3 innings pitched in the doubleheader.
Both squads played solid defense as only three errors were committed. The two teams combined to turn seven double plays.
GAME 1
Marvel was able to put the Red squad on the scoreboard first with a RBI double to left center field in the top of the first inning. Bostick was able to score from first after reaching base on a hit-by-pitch.
In the bottom of the frame, Keefer responded with a triple to center field, enabling William Long to score from second to tie the game.
The Black team tacked on another run in the second after Thad Griffen crushed a shot over the left field fence. A Daniel Nichols sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third extended the lead to 3-1.
The Red team pulled to within a run in the top of the 6th inning after leading off with back-to-back singles by Bostick and Lance Marvel. With no outs, Bostick scored from third after Dillion Guillory grounded into a double play.
The Black squad added a fourth run in the seventh inning after Adam Todd led off with a double down the left field line. He would score three batters later after a single to left field by Long.
Matt Goulas added an insurance run in the bottom of the eight for the Black team with a home run to left field.
Tyler Frederick gave the Red team a glimmer of hope, hitting a homer to left field in the bottom of the ninth. But the Red squad ultimately came up short falling, 5-3, after Bulliard recorded the last two outs of game.
Justin Robichaux picked up the win after pitching 3 2/3 innings. He allowed one run, striking out two and walking none. Zach Osborne earned the loss, giving up three runs in the 3 2/3 innings. He allowed five hits while striking out three.
Keefer finished the game going 3-for-4 with a single, a double and a triple. GAME 2 The start of the second game featured a pitcher’s duel between Hubbell and Geith. Neither pitcher allowed a hit in the first two innings.
Geith retired the first 11 batters the he faced. Hubbell only faced two over the minimum after two complete.
A Bostick double down the right field line in the bottom of the third inning scored Michael Faul with the first run of game for the Red team. Faul reached base when he led off the inning with a single through the left side and was later sacrificed over to second base by Kyle Olasin.
Bostick was brought home on the next at bat when Marvel singled up the middle.
The Black Team responded in their half of fourth inning. With two outs, Keefer became the first player to notch a hit off of Geith with an infield single on the back of the infield at third base. That was followed by a double from Goulas that allowed him to score.
After advancing to third on the throw, Goulas would score when he caught the Red team’s defense napping.
Keefer gave the Black team the lead in the sixth inning with a two-out, RBI double to right center field off of Red team pitcher Jordan Nicholson.
The Black team used double plays to keep the Red team off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings.
In the seventh inning, with a runner on first (Greg Fontenot), pitcher Ben Suit caught a line drive off the bat of Faul and tossed over to first for the double play. Then in the eighth inning, following a leadoff single by Olasin, Trask Switzenberg began an around the horn double play.
The Black team had upped the lead to 4-2 in the top half of the eighth inning with a Jordan Poirrier RBI single.
Bulliard closed the door on the game and the series when he recorded three strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth. GAME 1 LINE SCORE
